Mahatma Gandhi and Modern India

Ved Mehta was born in Lahore, British India (now a Pakistani city) in 1934. He lost his sight at the age of three due to cerebrospinal meningitis. He attended Balliol College, Oxford where he read modern history and at Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master's of Arts degree.

Mehta's first book, an autobiography called Face to Face, was published in 1957. Mehta published his first novel, Delinquent Chacha in 1966, which was then serialized in The New Yorker. Mehta was a staff writer at The New Yorker for over 30 years and wrote over twenty-four books as well numerous articles and short stories for publication in Britain, America and India. He became an American citizen in 1975.

Mehta delivered the Beatty Lecture in November 1979 on the topic "Mahatma Gandhi and Modern India".
