QUEBEC CITY - A first-half goal by Montrealer Alexandra Morin-Boucher held up as No. 7-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ blanked Laval 1-0 in women's university soccer, Sunday. Goalkeeper Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, made four saves to earn the shutout.
Morin-Boucher, who led the Quebec league in goals last year when she scored 11 of the team's 36 markers, took a pass from Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont., and netted the winning tally in the 18th minute of play.
"It was a total team effort. Winning there is always a very difficult task and we were ready to face that challenge," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We started very well and scored on a nice combination play between Bourque and (Alexandria) Hoyte with a nice finishing touch from Morin-Boucher. We wanted our players to play intelligently, with intensity, consistency and work ethic and we had all that today."
Laval tried to press offensively in the second half but the Martlets stayed well-organized and extremely focused on their defensive formation. The Rouge et Or had an 11-7 margin in shots toward the net but ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ held a 13-5 advantage in crosses and a 4-3 edge in corners.
"Claire Hooper and Kelsey Wilson were extremely effective at the back end, while Julia Bahen and Hoyte stepped up in the midfield," said Mounicot.
Laval 'keeper Audrey Letourneau made three saves and was saddled with the loss.
±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which improved to 4-0, will host Sherbrooke (2-1) and undefeated Montreal (4-0) on Sept. 23 and 25, respectively, at Molson Stadium.
The Rouge et Or evened their record at 2-2 and will play UQAM (0-4) and UQTR (2-2) next week.
