VICTORIA - Striker George Banks scored twice in a nine-minute span during the opening half and added an assist to lift the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen to a 3-1 win over McMaster in the consolation final and finish fifth at the 2011 CIS men's soccer championship on Saturday afternoon at the University of Victoria.

Ìý

The native of Baltimore, Md., scored in the sixth minute and again in the 15th minute to build a 2-0 lead that ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ never surrendered. Ouajih Hamouda of Hamilton, Ont., scored the lone Marauders goal to draw the Marauders within one, but ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s Yohann Capolungo of Auxerre, France, added a late insurance goal, assisted by Banks.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ took the lead only six minutes into game when a left-footed cross from Detroit native Alexander King found the head of a wide-open Banks to take a 1-0 lead.

Ìý

In the 12th minute, Jeremy Hurdle of Ambler, Pa., created another opportunity for the Redmen when a volley from Capolungo was stopped at close range by Marauders rookie goalkeeper Anthony Cavalluzzo of Hamilton, Ont. A follow-up header by Banks went just over the bar to keep the Marauders within one.

Ìý

Marauders midfielders Anthony Costa of Stoney Creek, Ont., and Brandon Gutierrez of Brampton, Ont., managed to string several passes together in the midfield but the frontline, led by Paterson Farrell of Oakville, Ont., was unable to connect.

Ìý

On the counter-attack down the right side, Taren Roughead of Coquitlam, B.C., served a perfect ball into the six-yard-box for Banks who converted to give ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute. It was a tourney-leading fifth marker for Banks,Ìý a fifth-year chemistry senior.

Ìý

The Marauders struggled to break the Redmen backline, quarterbacked by Vancouverite Graeme Tingey. It took a good individual effort by rookie Gutierrez down the right side to get the first shot on net for the Marauders. Gutierrez's cross in the 30th minute was nicely placed for Farrell to volley but ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ 'keeper Charles Kelly had little trouble with the save.

Ìý

A free kick outside the box for ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ in the 39th minute of play almost gave them a three-goal lead but Hurdle's left-footed shot curled just over the bar. The Redmen took their 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Marauders 13-4.

Ìý

McMaster cut ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s lead to 2-1 three minutes into the second stanza, when Hamouda received a long-range, drop-kick pass from goalkeeper Cavalluzzo and calmly put the ball past Kelly.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ striker Sebastian Munro of Vancouver had a chance to take the lead by two but his one-on-one chance in tight was saved by Cavalluzzo. Capolungo jumped on the rebound but his shot was blocked and his follow-up shot was deflected wide.

Ìý

The last two minutes were fast and furious. Trailing 2-1 in the 89th minute, the McMaster keeper took a free kick that almost travelled the length of the field, bounced and hit the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goalpost.

Ìý

The Redmen nearly added an insurance marker in the 90th minute as Capolungo made a run down the right flank, drawing Cavalluzzo out of his goal. Capolungo sent it across but a shot by Banks was stopped by a defender before it could find the open net. Teammate Peter Valente of Toronto nearly made it 3-1 a minute later when Cavalluzzo misplayed the ball just past the midfield line but Valente's shot toward the open net sailed wide.

Ìý

Banks then deked past a defender, drew out the McMaster keeper and passed the ball to Capolungo who netted his third of the tourney to ensure the Redmen victory.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ finished the tourney with a 2-1 record, and improved their all-time mark to 20-23-5 at the CIS champinships. The Marauders (1-2) dropped to 6-10-1 all-time at Nationals.

Ìý
