Baseball Redmen win opener at CIBA championships

WINDSOR, Ont. - Third baseman Channing Arndt of Yarmouth, Maine, went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and pitcher David Haberman of Teaneck, N.J., tossed a complete game four-hitter as the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen dumped Cape Breton University 8-2 to open the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association national championship tournament at ÌýMic-Mac Park, Friday.

The Redmen qualified for the tourney with a wild-card berth from the Northern Conference, while cape Breton entered the Nationals as Atlantic Conference champions. In other opening day results, the Concordia blanked host St. Clair College 3-0 and Durham College surprised Brock 8-5.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ outhit the Capers 12-4, exploding for four runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding three more in the second. They scored again in the fourth and coasted until the sixth inning when CBU tallied twice.

"Haberman pitched a gem and our bats came alive early," said first baseman Casey Auerbach of Westmount, Que., who walked once and scored a pair of runs. "We had a big lead after the first couple of innings and just cruised the rest of the way."

Haberman scattered four hits and allowed just one earned run over seven innings, striking out two batters and walking a pair. Kenny Long of Sydney, N.S., started for the Capers and took the loss. In just two innings of work, he gave up five earned runs on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ got a solid performance from designated-hitter Josh Gordon of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., who went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, scored two runs and had a pair of RBIs. The Redmen also got a two-hit effort from catcher Justin Cloutier of Kirkland, Que., who walked, hit a double and scored twice. Left-fielder Ted Davis of North Andover, Mass., went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ have their hands full with a doubleheader, Saturday. They play Durham College, champions of the Ontario Conference, at 1 p.m. followed by a game against Northern Conference champion Concordia at 4 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins, who was born in Chatham, Ont., threw out the first pitch to officially kick-off the CIBA national championship tourney. The Player of GameÌýAwards went to:
