Bears escape from Redmen trap again

EDMONTON -- Freshman defender Colin Joe of Edmonton scored the winner with 19 seconds remaining in overtime to give the No.2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears a 6-5 win over fifth-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ in a CIS non-conference matchup Tuesday night before 1,056 at Clare Drake Arena.

Ìý

It was Alberta's second come-from-behind win in as many nights over the upstart Redmen, who have quietly posted a 16-6-1 record overall.

Ìý

The previous night, a buzzer-beater by rearguard Kyle Fecho with only 0.7 seconds left in regulation gave Alberta a 5-4 victory.

Ìý

Joe, who registered three points in the game to take over the Bears scoring lead, put home his miracle marker when he took a pass from Chad Klassen of Saskatoon at the top of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ defensive zone and fired a howitzer at Redmen netminder Hubert Morin. The sophomore goaltender from St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que., caught most of the puck with his right pad, but it slowly bounced up and over his outstretched pad before crossing the goal line.

Ìý

Morin helped his team force the sudden-death session by holding Alberta scoreless on 11 shots in the third period while Francis Verreault-Paul, a sophomore wingerÌý from Mashteuiatsh, Que., scored twice in a six-minute span to knot the score at 5-5.

Ìý

Assisting on both of those goals, linemate Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., tallied two of his own earlier in the game and led all players with four points. Rookie Maxime Langelier-Parent of Levy, Que., scored the other Redmen marker.

Ìý

Klassen, Brian Woolger of Edmonton, Ian Barteaux of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Eric Hunter of Oakbank, Man., and Dale Mahovsky, also from Fort Saskatchewan, each netted singles for the home team before Joe's heroics ended the game.

Ìý

Between the pipes, freshman Travis Yonkman of Saskatoon, made 34 saves in the Alberta net while Morin responded with a 31-save performance for the visitors.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will continue their tour of western Canada to play the UBC Thunderbirds on January 2 and 3, while the Golden Bears will host the Calgary Dinos on January 8 in the first game of a home-and-home series.
