OTTAWA -- Freshman Ryan Besse of Toronto netted a hat-trick as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ outlasted Carleton 11-7 in men's university lacrosse at the nation's capital, Wednesday.

Ìý

The Redmen improved to 6-2 in the six-team CUFLA East, have clinched a playoff berth and moved into sole possession of first place, two points ahead of idle Trent (5-1) and Bishop's (5-1).Ìý Fourth-place Carleton dropped to 3-4.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led 6-1 after the first quarter, 8-3 at halftime and 9-6 after three stanzas. Despite the late scoring spluge by Carleton, the Redmen kept their composure and hung on for the victory.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ fielded a depleted lineup that was without three All-Canadians, Scott Bailey (midfielder), Brendan Farrer (defence) and midfielder Luke LaCava, due to exams and injuries. Also absent was No. 1 goaltender Guy Fox and starting defenceman Kyle Robinson.

Ìý

"We were able to display some excellent depth," said ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ head coach Tim Murdoch. "Eight different players registered points and our defence played admirably on a soggy, grass field."

Ìý

Rookie attacker Alex Kruse of Oakville, Ont., scored once and added four helpers. Junior attackman Greg Henry of Halton Hills, Ont., and Sean Simeson, a third-year midfielder from Oshawa, Ont., each added a pair. Matt Jankowski of Brewster, N.Y., and Boston nativeÌý Mike Ting added singles.

Ìý

On defence, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ enjoyed excellent long-stick middy play from New YorkerÌý Rich Brode, and another dominant face-off outing for Jacob Winn of Falmouth, ME.Ìý Goaltender Simon Hudson, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Seattle, registered the win.

Ìý

Carleton scoring was led by attackman Corey Fowler (2-3-5) and supported by Tim Bergin (2-1-3), Alex Ince (2-0-2) and Raj Wasson (1-1-2).

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will head south of the border for a pair of non-conference games against a couple of top-notch American squads before resuming league play. They will take on Plattsburgh State, an NCAA Div. 3 team in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Oct. 15, then travel to Worcester, Mass., for a game two days later at Holy Cross, an NCAA Div. 1 squad.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s has two more regular season contests remaining before playoffs, including a much-anticipated home rendez-vous against Bishop's on Oct. 22 that will have major playoff implications. The top two finishers in CUFLA East are awarded home playoff games in the quarterfinals.
