Bettez named league MVP as five Martlets merit all-star honours

MONTREAL - Ann-Sophie Bettez , a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ University ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Sept-Iles, Que., has been named female hockey player of the year for the second time in three seasons, by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec.

Ìý

Bettez, who finished second in the league scoring race with 37 points and 13 goals in 20 games, was one of five members of the division-leading Martlets who merited RSEQ all-star status, including three who won major awards, in voting conducted by the conference's five head coaches.

Joining Bettez on the list of laureates was conference scoring leader ²Ñé±ô´Ç»å¾±±ð Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., who registered an impressive 18-25-43 record in 18 games and was voted rookie of the year. Also, Martlets bench boss Peter Smith of Lachine, Que., collected his seventh coach-of-the-year award, guiding ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ to first place with an 18-1-1 record

Bettez and Daoust also earned first-team all-conference honours along with teammates Cathy Chartrand, a defenceman from Lac Nominingue, Que., and goaltender Charline Labonté of Boisbriand, Que.

Chartrand was the top-scoring rearguard in the nation with a 6-16-22 record in 19 contests, while Labonté, the three-time Olympic gold medallist, posted a 16-2 record and led all netminders in goals-against average (1.06), save percentage (.944) and shutouts (8),

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ centre Leslie Oles, a native of Beaconsfield, Que., was picked to the second dream team. She was fourth in the scoring race with 28 points, including 16 goals, in 18 games.

Overlooked in the voting was ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Katia Clement-Heydra, who finished third in the scoring race with 32 points in 20 games, matching Daoust for the league lead in goals with 18.

Daoust was also selected to the RSEQ all-rookie team along with Martlets defenceman Brittany Fouracres, an engineering freshman from Calgary.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ opens defence of their CIS national championship title on Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a best-of-three semifinal series in Ottawa. Due to a scheduling conference with the men's semifinals, the Martlets have agreed to open their series on the road against the Gee-Gees. Game 2 is slated for McConnell Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. If a rubber match is needed, it will be also be at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.
