Bettez nets hat, Martlets knit win; Streak at 65

MONTREAL - Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., scored a hat-trick as No.1-ranked skated to a 5-1 victory at the University of Montreal in women's hockey, Friday.

It improved ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s lifetime record to 3-0 against the eighth-ranked Carabins and more importantly, extended their win streak to 65 consecutive games against Canadian university opponents, two shy of the CIS record set by Alberta in 2005. The Martlets are 31-0 against teams ranked in the Top 10 during their run for the record.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had a large territorial advantage over Montreal, with a 47-19 margin in shots, including a lopsided 18-4 edge in the final frame.

Fabienne Marcotte of Bécancour, Que., broke open a scoreless tie at 1:52 of the middle period for the Carabins but ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ rallied with five unanswered goals.

Rearguard Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., opened the floodgates for the Martlets at 10:04 of the period with her fourth marker of the campaign.

Bettez put ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ ahead only 107 seconds later with an even-strength goal that proved to be the game-winner. She later added a shorthanded marker at 19:23 of the second to make it 4-1 and capped the rally with a power-play goal at 19:22 of the third.

Rebecca Martindale of Kingston, Ont., also connected on the power-play with her sixth of the season for the Red & White, who went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage. Montreal went 0-for-6 on the power-play and gave up the aforementioned SHG.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ captain Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland, Que., picked up three assists and now leads the Quebec conference scoring race with 6-10-16 in eight games. A fifth-year senior who is ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s all-time leading scorer, she sits two points ahead of Bettez (9-5-14).

Rookie netminder Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., kicked aside 18 of 19 shots for the win and improved to 4-0. Catherine Herron, a former ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goalie from Chambly, Que., made 47 saves in a losing cause for the Carabins. Her record fell to 5-3.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (8-0) plays at Carleton (3-4) Saturday at 6 p.m. The Carabins fell to 7-2 and will host Carleton on Sunday.
