Bishop's beaten by Balloch, win streak extended to 15

LENNOXVILLE, Que. - Gideon Balloch of Ottawa scored seven points and a try in the 49th minute by Liam Brown proved to be the difference as the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen squeaked out a 16-10 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Rugby Union action at Coulter Field, Friday.

It marked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s 15th consecutive victory over a QURL opponent, dating back to October, 2008.

Brown's try came after the Redmen won a scrum deep in Bishop's territory and moved it out to right wing. His five-yard run made the score 11-3, and a conversion by Gideon Balloch put ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ up by 10. Balloch also added a pair of penalty kicks in the contest.

The Gaiters held most of the possession in the first half, led by the strong defensive work of flanker Stefan Lemieux (Vancouver, B.C.), but were unable to convert their possession into points. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ emerged with a 6-3 halftime lead on a pair of penalty kicks by Balloch, while Billy Murphy (Richmond, Que.) responded with one of his own for the Gaiters.

The Gaiters continued to work the ball into the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ end in the second half, but had several forays toward the Redmen goal thwarted by penalties. Bishop's finally hit pay dirt in the 80th minute, as substitute Eric Smith (Vancouver, B.C.) pushed the ball over the goal line after a multiple-phase Gaiter possession. A Murphy conversion pulled the Gaiters to within three at 13-10. However, it was too little, too late, as Brendan O'Sullivan added a final penalty kick for ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ to stretch the margin to six points.

Lemieux was the Gaiters' man of the match, as he keyed the Bishop's offence and made several big tackles that thwarted key Redmen possessions.

The Gaiters (1-3-0) did take one bonus point from the game, as they lost by fewer than seven points, and now are third in the QURU with 6 points. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (5-0) remains on top of the league with 23 points, as they host second-place Concordia next week. The Gaiters return to action on Sunday, October 24, when they visit the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. Kickoff at the U de S Annex field is set for 1 p.m.
