Bloom scores historic goal for new team in Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio -- Sam Bloom gave the home-town crowd an early boost when he notched the first goal, shorthanded, in franchise history at 6:07 of the opening period but it wasn't enough as his Dayton Gems dropped their International Hockey League debut 4-3 in overtime to the visiting Fort Wayne Komets, before 2,789 at Hara Arena, Friday.

Bloom, the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ grad who had been released by the AHL's Cincinnati Cyclones earlier in the week, raced down the left wing and beat Komets goaltender Nick Boucher with a quick wrist shot to the far side for a 1-0 lead.

Dayton squandered a two-goal third-period to force the overtime session.
