Carabins trim Martlets in tight volleyball match-up

MONTREAL - Marie-Sophie Nadeau racked up 23 kills a pair of aces and three stuff blocks as the No.5-ranked Montreal Carabins defeated ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ 3-1 in women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-23 in a match that took an hour and 26 minutes to play.
It was ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s 20th consecutive loss to the Carabins, including seven exhibition matches, since the last Martlet conquest, a 3-2 home-court decision on Nov. 16, 2007.
"We've been working on trying to develop and look more confident against the Carabins," said ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ head coach Rachele Beliveau. "We hit very well against them this time and seemed to be more positive and confident but we seem to be hesitant when the game is on the line and need to show more intensity."
Sophomore Kelsey Irwin, a 5-foot-11 power-hitter from Vancouver, B.C., sparked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s offence with 21 kills, one ace and a pair of stuff blocks. Montreal natives Genevieve Plante and Kaiva Mateus had 10 and seven kills, respectively, and Emily Kyte of Ottawa contributed six kills and two blocks.
The Carabins improved to 14-3 but remained two points in arrears of Laval (15-2). While third-place ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ dropped to 9-8 with three matches remaining before playoffs. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which plays at Sherbrooke on Saturday, will confront the Carabins once more, on Feb. 4 at the Centre CEPSUM, before seeing each other in the first round of post-season play.
