Chartrand nets OT winner to ice NCAA's Catamounts

Published: 4 October 2009

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior Cathy Chartrand scored with two and a half minutes left in sudden-death overtime to give ֱ a 2-1 victory over Vermont in women’s hockey action at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt., Sunday. The Martlets are the two-time defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions, improved to 3-0 against Hockey East teams this preseason.

Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 rearguard from Lac Nominingue, Que., was able to lace a slap shot past Kristen Olychuck of Kelowna, B.C., after Vanessa Davidson found her open on the left side of the ice.

Junior Celeste Doucet of Memramcook, N.B., scored 10 minutes into the opening period. Doucet converted a long pass from junior Hannah Westbrook of Laramie, Wyom., to beat ֱ goaltender Gabrielle Smith to the glove side.

The Martlets bounced back in the second period when Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 9:28.

The Catamounts seemed to take control of the game in the third period by outshooting ֱ 13-3, something that UVM head coach Tim Bothwell was proud of.

“I loved the way we played in the third period against a very good team,” Bothwell said. “In the past we might have been hesitant, but we went after them. It’s just a shame we couldn’t find a way to win. I was impressed and proud of our effort and it was a good, solid way to start the year.”

As is often the case when CIS teams play in the U.S., ֱ got the short-end of the straw and were shorthanded for 14 minutes, compared to only 10 minutes for UVM. The last five minors assessed were all to the Martlets, including all three penalties called in the third period, which began with a minor assessesd for returning to the ice late.

"They didn't give us the usual three-minute warning," explained new ֱ head coach Amey Doyle. "But rules are rules and we killed the penalty and I thought we had good momentum after that, despite the shots on net."

UVM outshot ֱ 28-24 in the game and Olychuck made 22 saves for Vermont, while Smith registered 27 saves for the victory.

The Catamounts return to action this weekend when they host Union College in a two-game series. The Martlets, who now have a 3-1 preseason record against NCAA teams, will open defence of their Quebec and national titles when they host Concordia on Oct. 9 at McConnell Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
