Chartrand shines as Martlets outpeck Ravens

MONTREAL - Team captain Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., scored twice as top-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ clipped the Carleton Ravens 6-1 in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday, extending their win streak to 86 games against Quebec University Hockey League opponents.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which outshot Carleton 35-23, has never lost to Ravens and improved to 53-0-1 lifetime in head-to-head matchups.

Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 senior who leads all CIS blueliners in points with 4-5-9 in five games, gave ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a 2-0 lead at 13:28 of the first period and put the game out of reach at 4-1 with a blueline blast only 68 seconds into the final stanza.

Also scoring for the Martlets were seniors Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., and Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept Iles, Que., plus junior Lainie Smith of Aurora, Ont., and rookie Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., each of whom registered their third goal of the season.

Victoria Gouge, a sophomore rearguard from Brampton, Ont., spoiled Charline Labonte's bid for a third straight shutout. The all-Canadian puck-stopper from Boisbriand, Que., made 22 saves and now has kicked aside 44 of 45 shots in her three contests since returning from a preseason knee injury.

Victoria Powers, a freshman from Ajax, Ont., was credited with 29 saves and took the loss for the Ravens, evening her record at 1-1. Carleton, an injury-plagued squad, dressed only 18 players, two below the norm, To make matters worse, they had four players shaken up at various times during the game with a variety of ailments, two of them on plays that directly led to ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goals.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (5-0) will host the ninth-ranked Montreal Carabins (3-2-1) on Nov. 13, while the Ravens (2-4) are off to lick their damaged wings until Nov. 21, when they take on the visiting Carabins.
