CIS TOP 10: Martlets ranked No. 1 for 24th week

OTTAWA (CIS) – The undefeated ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Martlets hockey team are
ranked No.1 in the nation for the 24th consecutive poll.
±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (10-0), the reigning CIS champion, was once again too much
for its rivals last weekend outscoring Concordia (3-9), 10-0, and
Carleton (4-7), 8-1. The Martlets host No. 10 Ottawa (5-4) on
Saturday.
In other CIS sports, the Simon Fraser Clan (women’s basketball),
Carleton Ravens (men’s basketball), Alberta (men’s hockey),
Montreal Carabins (women’s volleyball), Calgary Dinos (women’s and
men’s swimming) and Guelph Gryphons (women’s track and field) all
held on to their No. 1 status, while the Windsor Lancers moved up
five positions to the top of the men’s track and field
rankings.
Also, with four games remaining on their respective conference
schedules, the reigning CIS champion Alberta Golden Bears and the
Laval Rouge et Or are both ranked No.1 and enjoying near-perfect
men’s volleyball seasons.
Top-ranked Alberta and No. 2 Laval both improved to 14-0 in
conference play over the weekend. The Bears were voted No. 1 for
the tenth time in 10 coaches polls this week, while the Rouge et Or
remained in second place for the third straight week after spending
the first seven national polls in third position.
In men’s volleyball, No. 1 Alberta has lost only five of 47 sets
thus far in Canada West play and enjoys a comfortable six-point
lead over Calgary (11-3) atop the conference standings.
The Bears made quick work of No. 8 Trinity Western (7-5) last
weekend sweeping the Spartans in three sets on Friday and
prevailing in four games on Saturday. Alberta hosts No. 6 Winnipeg
(7-5) for a pair this weekend before closing out the regular season
with two road duels in Regina (1-13) next week.
No. 2 Laval has been as dominant in Quebec winning 42 out of 45
sets in league play, and has already clinched the QSSF season
title.
The Rouge et Or did survive a scare last Saturday when they had to
overcome a two-game deficit to defeat No. 4 Dalhousie (10-2) in
QSSF-AUS interlock competition. The perennial Quebec champions had
no problems with UNB and Memorial, sweeping its other AUS rivals in
straight sets.
Laval will end the regular schedule with home games against ±«ÓãÖ±²¥
(4-10) and Sherbrooke (7-7) this weekend, and duels versus
Sherbrooke and Montreal (6-8) next week.
In women’s basketball, top-ranked Simon Fraser improved to 16-1 in
Canada West play with a pair of dominating wins over Fraser Valley
(4-13), 87-50 and 88-64. The Clan visit No. 9 Calgary (7-9) Friday
and Lethbridge (3-13) Saturday.
In men’s hoops, No. 1 Carleton (11-1) returned from a trip to
Sudbury and Toronto with convincing victories over Laurentian
(2-11), 110-58, and York (4-9), 89-72. The Ravens make the short
drive to Kingston this weekend to face RMC (0-13) and Queen’s
(6-7).
In men’s hockey, top-seeded and defending national champion Alberta
(15-2-1) had little trouble at home against UBC (5-11-2), defeating
the Thunderbirds 6-1 and 5-0. The Golden Bears should be tested
this weekend as they host their archrivals, the No. 4 Saskatchewan
Huskies (14-5-1), Friday and Saturday.
In women’s volleyball, top-ranked and 2007-08 CIS finalist Montreal
(17-0) enjoyed a break in the QSSF schedule last week. The Carabins
will be back in action this weekend as they visit Sherbrooke (9-8)
on Friday before hosting ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (11-6) on Sunday.
