CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#1): Three ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ teams listed

OTTAWA (CIS) - Three ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ teams are listed among the first CIS Top national rankings released Tuesday, including both soccer squads and the women's rugby team.

Ìý

Defending national champions York, St. Francis Xavier and Queen's sit atop their respective Top 10 rankings to open the CIS season.

Ìý

In women's soccer the Queen's Gaels open the season at number one after winning the national championship last year with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks who open the season ranked number two. The Gaels kick-off regular season play this Wednesday against the Carleton Ravens.

The first national coaches poll of the season is completed with No. 3 Montreal, No. 4 Alberta, No. 5 Trinity Western, No. 6 UBC, No. 7 University of the Fraser Valley, No. 8 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, No. 9 Ottawa, and No. 10 UPEI

On the men's side, the York Lions begin defense of their national championship ranked as the top team in the country, improving on their number 10 ranking to begin last season. The Lions opened their season on the road earning a 1-1 draw against Laurier on Friday before defeating the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 on Saturday.

Rounding out the season's first Top 10 is No. 2 UBC, No. 3 Saint Mary's, No. 4 Toronto, No. 5 Western, No. 6 Laval, No. 7 Alberta, No. 8 UQAM, No. 9 St. Francis Xavier, No. 10 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥.

In women's rugby, the St. Francis Xavier X-Women follow up winning their second Monilex Trophy with a number one ranking to open the season. The X-Women became the first team to win the Monilex Trophy in extra time, defeating Concordia 17-12 last year. StFX begins their season this Sunday at home against tenth-ranked Acadia.
