MONTREAL – Four ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ teams find themselves in the CIS top 10 national rankings this week. 

In women's hockey, No. 1 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ defeated Concordia 7-0 and Ottawa 3-1 to improve to 14-0 on the campaign and extend their winning streak against CIS opponents to 43 games, dating back to last season. The defending national champion Martlets are back on the road again and will play at Ottawa and Carleton this weekend.

In men's hockey, the Redmen (17-7-2) made their first appearance in the national spotlight with a 10th-place ranking after a pair of victories over UQTR and Concordia to extend their win streak to eight. The Redmen have clinched second place in the OUA Far East and will close out the regular season at home to Carleton (13-10-4) and at Ottawa (10-11-5), on Friday at McConnell Arena and Saturday at the UOttawa Sports Centre, respectively.

In swimming, the Redmen have dropped one spot to No.7 after finishing third at the QSSF championships last weekend.

In women's volleyball, the Martlets (13-8) find themselves tied with York for ninth in the Top 10 after suffering a two-game sweep to Laval in the hard-fought QSSF semifinal series.

The Montreal Carabins and Alberta Golden Bears led the CIS women’s and men’s volleyball rankings from start to finish in 2008-09.

The Montreal women and Alberta men both topped all 13 national coaches polls this season.

The Carabins, who kept a CIS-best 20-1 conference record and had a bye in the first round of the Quebec playoffs this past weekend, host No. 8 Laval (14-7 / 2-0 playoffs) Thursday night in the first game of the best-of-three QSSF final.

Both Montreal and Laval have already qualified for the 2009 CIS championship to be held by UNB in Fredericton, February 26-28. The Carabins had their best finish in history last year claiming CIS silver.

It marks the second straight year that a women’s volleyball team holds on to the No. 1 spot the entire campaign. Manitoba accomplished the feat in 2006-07 before missing the CIS championship after settling for fourth place at the Canada West Final Four.

In men’s volleyball, reigning national champion Alberta (18-0) was one of two CIS teams to finish conference play with an unblemished record in 2008-09, along with No. 2 Laval (18-0).

The Bears have a bye in the first round of the Canada West playoffs this week and will host the conference Final Four on February 20-21, one week before hosting the CIS championship in Edmonton, February 27 – March 1.

Alberta was leading the coaches poll from start to finish for the second straight season and for the third time in five years.

In other CIS sports, the Simon Fraser Clan (women’s basketball), Carleton Ravens (men’s basketball), Alberta Golden Bears (men’s hockey), Calgary Dinos (women’s and men’s swimming), Guelph Gryphons (women’s track and field) and Windsor Lancers (men’s track and field) also held on to their No. 1 status this week.

In women’s basketball, No. 1 Simon Fraser soundly beat No. 8 Winnipeg (13-9) 87-56 and defeated Manitoba (8-14) 100-57 over the past weekend to finish conference play with a Canada West-best 22-1 mark.

The Clan host Trinity Western (11-12) starting Friday for a best-of-three playoff series. SFU won all three head-to-head contests this season prevailing 68-44, 106-50 and 69-51.

In men’s hoops, No. 1 Carleton (18-1) remained one game ahead of No. 3 Ottawa (17-2) in the OUA East standings with victories over Ryerson (11-8), 98-62, and Toronto (12-7), 74-54. The Ravens host Queen’s (6-13) and RMC (0-19) this weekend before wrapping up the regular season with a much-anticipated showdown with Ottawa on February 21.

In volleyball, Laval and Dalhousie swept the QSSF and AUS banners, respectively, while the Western Ontario women and Toronto men were crowned OUA champions.
