MONTREAL – HĂ©lène Bibeau, a six-foot power ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą with the Nomades de Collège Montmorency, has signed a letter of intent to play varsity basketball for ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą.

Born in St. Lambert, Que., and raised in nearby St. Bruno, the 20-year-old is considered a candidate to become a starter in her freshman campaign with the Martlets.

Last year, Bibeau led the Nomades in scoring with an average of 11.9 points per game. She ranked sixth among the CEGEP AAA league’s free-throw leaders with an 85.1 per cent success rate, making 46 of 54 attempts.

“HĂ©lène was highly sought after by numerous schools in both Canada and the US, so to have her choose ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą is great for our program,” said Martlets head coach Ryan Thorne. “She is a good student-athlete who works hard on and off the court. With her height, she can pull post players out of their comfort zone. She has the ability to shoot three-pointers when needed but can also take it down low and mix it up. Her versatility will definitely help us and she is just the type of player that we need.”

Bibeau, who plans to study elementary education at ±«ÓăÖ±˛Ą, has had a storied past in her up-and-coming basketball career. Initially, she played high school ball at SĂ©minaire Sainte-TrinitĂ© where she was named athlete of the year in 2002. The following season, she was named MVP of the Ligue MĂ©tropolitaine de Basketball and moved to Quebec City for her final three years of high school to play for Centre Provincial d’Excellence du QuĂ©bec, an elite sport-Ă©tudes program.

In 2004 and 2005, respectively, Bibeau spent her summers as a member of the Quebec provincial team, competing for Quebec at the national under-17 championship and for the Canadian U-18 squad at the USA Basketball Women’s Youth Development Festival in Colorado Springs.
