PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior of Sterling Heights, Mich., scored twice as the Providence College women's hockey team defeated ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ 3-1, in exhibition action at Schneider Arena, Friday.

The Martlets were without the service of their top three stars as goalie Charline Labonte of Boisbriand, Que., ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., and defenceman Gillian Ferrari of Thornhill, Ont., are all taking part in a Hockey Canada evaluation camp in Calgary.

After a scoreless first period, the Friars struck twice in just over two minutes. Junior of La Verne, Calif., converted from the slot at the 13:11 mark of the second period. The Friars made it 2-0 at 15:29 of the second, as Cottrell scored her first of the evening.

In the third period, Cottrell extended the Friars lead to 3-0 at the 54-second mark.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ scored its lone goal at 5:48 to cut the deficit to 3-1 when first-year Martlet ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Logan Murray buried a rebound.

The Friars were backboned by senior goaltender of Wareham, Mass., who turned aside 16 shots for the victory.

This is the second consecutive year the Friars have welcomed the CIS powerhouse Martlets for exhibition play and the fifth meeting overall. Providence now holds a 4-1 series lead. The teams will meet again at Schneider Arena on Saturday (9/25). Face-off is set for 4 p.m.
