Double-double spells trouble for Gaiters

LENNOXVILLE - A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko of St. Dorothee, Que., led ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ to a 57-51 win over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women's action Friday at the Mitchell Gym.

The second-year ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Martlets held off a pair of second-half charges by the Gaiters.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had two other players in double figures, with rookie Marie-Eve Martin pf Granby, Que., scoring 12 points, and senior Nathifa Weekes of Montreal adding 11.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led by as many as 13 in the third quarter, but BU roared back and tied the score at 48-48 with four minutes left. However, the visitors held on for the victory and improved to 4-6 in the QUBL (9-10 overall), putting them in a tie for third with the Gaiters, who fell to 4-5 (10-8 overall).

Katy Germain of Val d'Or, Que., paced the Gaiters with 15 points and three steals, while teammate Marie-Ève Lemoine of Sorel, Que., contributed eight points and four assists.

As they did last week, the Gaiters got off to a slow start, shooting only 24 per cent from the field (6-for-25) in the first half. The Martlets took advantage and led throughout the game, taking a 13-9 ladvance in the first quarter. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ stretched their lead to 10 on a 6-0 run in the first minute of the second quarter and maintained that edge through the rest of the half, taking a 29-19 lead into intermission.

The Martlets took their largest lead of the night at 40-27 halfway through the third period. However, BU responded with an 11-2 run, keyed by six of Lemoine's eight points, to cut the margin to 42-38 and ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led 44-40 after three quarters.

In the final stanza, a three-pointer by Weekes put ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ up 48-40, but the Gaiters went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 48-48, with Germain making a steal and driving to the net to even the score with four minutes left. The teams traded three-pointers to make it 51-51 with 3:27 to play, but Bishop's missed their last four field-goal attempts and let the victory slip from their grasp.

The Gaiters are back in action Saturday night as they take on Laval (8-1) at the Centre PEPS in Quebec City. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will host last-place Concordia (3-7 QUBL; 9-10 CIS) the same night. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
