Doucet's hat and special teams help Redmen sink T-Birds

Published: 2 January 2010

Ìý

VANCOUVER - Senior Guillaume Doucet of Anjou, Que., scored a hat-trick and the No. 5-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen's potent offensive attack was on full display Saturday night as they dispatched the UBC Thunderbirds 6-4 in a non-conference men's hockey game at Father Bauer Arena.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which leads the nation in scoring, tallied four of their six markers on special teams with another goal coming just seconds after UBC had killed off a power play.

Ìý

Doucet, who leads the Redmen with 24 goals in 24 games, made it 2-0 at 14:18 of the first period and potted a pair in the first eight minutes of the final period to give ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ a 5-3 lead.Ìý His third goal, a nifty bit of work in close on a rebound, counted as the game-winner for the Redmen who are now 17-6-1 overall and 1-2-0 on their Canada West holiday trip that saw them lose a pair of one-goal games, both in the dying seconds, to the No.2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears last weekend.

Ìý

Clayton Bauer had a pair for the Thunderbirds with teammates Craig Lineker and Jordan Inglis also finding the back of the net.

Ìý

Lineker tied the game 3-3 at the 1:03 mark of the final period as his slapshot deflected off ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goalie Hunter Shaw's glove and into the net, bringing UBC all the way back from a 3-0 deficit.

Ìý

The Redmen responded just over two minutes later with Doucet tallying his second of the game on the power play.Ìý He added another four minutes later and then sophomore rearguard Marc-Andre Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., provided an insurance marker at 12:08 to make it 6-3.

Ìý

Bauer added his second of the game with 1:50 to play, banging home a rebound after a scrum in front of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ net, but another three-goal comeback by UBC was not on the docket, as the Redmen held the hosts off the scoresheet the rest of the way.

Ìý

UBC outshot ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ 39-30 but Shaw, a freshman from Penticton, B.C., earned the victory and improved to 3-1 overall, after making 35 saves. UBC rookie Jordan White made 24 saves and was saddled with the loss.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had opened the scoring with a pair of power play markers just over 13 minutes into the first period. They took advantage of a pair of T-Bird penalties on the same shift with defenceman Yan Turcotte scoring his ninth of the campaign at 13:26, blasting a low point-shot through a forest of legs on a 5-on-3 advantage.Ìý The offensively-gifted Redmen wasted little time adding a second power play goal as Doucet finished off a nifty tic-tac-toe play just 52 seconds later.

Ìý

Freshman Jean-Francois Boisvert of Mirabel, Que., made it 3-0 early in the middle period with his second shorthanded marker of the season. He stole the puck at the Redmen blueline on the penalty kill and went 120 feet untouched before beating White at 3:33.

Ìý

Inglis put the T-Birds on the scoreboard just over five minutes later, wristing home a shot from the right face-off circle after some sustained pressure by the T-Birds.

Ìý

Bauer narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a great individual effort at 14:34 of the middle period.Ìý The 6-foot-1 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ knocked down a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ clearing attempt in the neutral zone and carried the puck into the Redmen zone before firing a wrist-shot from the left boards which beat Shaw high on the glove side.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ went 3-for-7 on the power play while UBC was 0-for-4 and coughed up a shorthanded effort.Ìý The two teams combined for 19 penalties and 54 minutes in a fast and physical game.

Ìý

The two schools meet again Sunday afternoon at Father Bauer Arena.Ìý Puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Ìý

REDMEN RAP: Alternate captain Evan Vossen had three assists in the game and now has a career-best 12-20-32 record in 24 games... It was the first meeting in 11 years between ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ and UBC and marked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s first-ever win over UBC as the Redmen improved to 1-3 lifetime against the T-Birds... The Redmen are now 4-15-2 lifetime against Canada West squads... ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ penalty-killing unit has scored eight shorthanded goals in 24 contests overall, three shy of the single-season school record...
