Former Martlets trio help Montreal claim Clarkson Cup

BARRIE, Ont - Three former members of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Martlets helped the Montreal Stars to a 5-0 victory over Toronto to claim the Clarkson Cup, as champions of the Canadian Women's Hockey League at the Barrie Molson Centre, Sunday.

Montreal had a 51-26 edge in shots as former Martlets goaltender Kim St-Pierre of Chateauguay, Que., posted 26 saves for the shutout. Forward Vanessa Davidson, a native of Kirkland, Que., who graduated from the Martlets last year, scored once for the winning side before 2,600 fans in a game that was broadcast nationally on TSN. The other ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ grad in the lineup was defenceman Gillian Merrifield of London, Ont.

In case you were wondering, this is the same Montreal squad that defeated the Martlets 3-1 in a hard-fought exhibition game at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ last month (Feb. 4).

Also scoring for Montreal was Noémie Marin, Dominique Thibault and Canadian Olympic gold medalists Caroline Ouellette and Sarah Vaillancourt, who was named the tournament's MVP.

Toronto goalie Sami Jo Small was saddled with the loss despite a 46-save performance.

The four-day round-robin tournament that also featured Brampton and Minnesota, The CWHL is a five-team league that also includes Boston and features a number of European players. The rival Western Women's Hockey League, in which Minnesota is the only American team, is a competing league with four teams out West.

The Cup, which is presented to the CWHL champions, is named after Canada's former Governor-General, Adrienne Clarkson.
