Gause ignites house, tallies career-high 24

MONTREAL - Sophomore Greg Gause of Williston, Vt., scored a career-high 24 points and was one of four Redmen to reach double figures in scoring as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ defeated the visiting UQAM Citadins 78-67 in men's university basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The Redmen improved to 3-1 and share the division lead with Laval (3-0) and Concordia (3-1), while UQAM dropped to 2-3.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had a surprising 41-29 edge in rebounding against the Citadins, a more athletic squad that entered the game as one of the top rebounding teams in the country.

"We talked about that in the pre-game walk-through," said ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ head coach David DeAveiro. "They haven't been a good shooting team thus far and that means lots of rebounds are up for grabs. We held them to 10 offensive boards and grabbed 26 in our zone and that was the difference."

Gause, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound centre, took advantage of a good match-up and had a career day, shooting 11-for-15 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line. He grabbed six rebounds and was credited with three blocked shots in 26 minutes of court time.

"Greg had a great game. He kept it pretty simple too, concentrating on making his shots," said DeAveiro. He was matched up primarily against (6-foot-7 rookie) Vincent Lanctot-Fortier and we liked that match-up."

Other leading Redmen scorers included rookie Simon Bibeau (16 pts, 4 rbs) of St. Bruno, Que., sophomore Nicolas Langley (12 pts., 6 rbs) of Golden, B.C., and point-guard Olivier Bouchard, a sophomore from Montreal, who was credited with 11 points, 8 rebounds and seven assists.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ was productive off the bench, scoring 26 points and coming up with 17 rebounds, compared to the UQAM bench which produced 15 points and five rebounds.

The Redmen, who led 23-17 after the first quarter, 39-36 at the half and 57-51 after three, shot 44.4 per cent from the field (32/72), 36.4 from the three-point arc (4/11) and 62.5 from the foul line (10/16). UQAM shot 37.9, 33.3 and 70.6, respectively.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will close out the first semester with a key home contest against undefeated Laval, ranked no.3 in the nation, on Dec. 2. UQAM is off for the December exam break and won't return to action until they host their own Holiday tournament, featuring the Redmen, Dec. 28-30.
