Gordon's distilled shot sinks Islanders

PIERREFONDS, QUE. - Centre-fielder Adam Gordon of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., smacked a three-run homer as the visiting ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redbirds exploded with a six-run second inning en route to an 8-1 romp over John Abbott College in men's university baseball, Tuesday.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ right-handed starter Anthony Carbone, a senior from Montreal, struck out a season-high 12 batters and scattered three hits over six innings of work for the win. He walked four and had one hit batsman.

Gordon, an electrical engineering sophomore, hammered a towering shot to left off Martin Gagnier, the Islanders starter, to stake the Redbirds to an early 6-0 lead.

The top of the batting order came up big, notably leadoff hitter Steven Hersch of Toronto, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, two doubles and a run scored. Shortstop Alex Day, who batted second, continued his torrid pace by going 2-for-3 with a pair of bases on balls, two runs scored, an RBI and even a stolen base. The fifth-year senior rom Toronto is now batting .400 on the season with eight hits (and four walks) in 20 at bats.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ improved to 4-2 in the CIBA's Northern Conference, while the winless Islanders dropped to 0-5. The Redbirds will have a bye this weekend and are scheduled to suit up next on Sept. 24 against Concordia at Trudeau Park in Cote St-Luc. However, the team is hoping to reschedule a previously cancelled game with John Abbott to Wednesday, Sept. 23.
