MONTREAL - Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., tallied twice and added a helper as the No.2-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen struck four times in less than five minutes during the opening period and waltzed to a 6-0 whitewash over visiting Queen's in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

Ìý

It marked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s 19th consecutive win over the Gaels since a 5-2 loss on Feb. 6, 2004 as the Redmen improved to 112-50-2 lifetime against Queen's, in a rivalry that began way back in 1895.

Ìý

Maxime Langelier-Parent, a senior from Lery, Que., ignited the explosion with what proved to be his league-leading third game-winner of the season at 3:39 of the first period. Team captain Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask., scored 11 seconds later, followed by Verreault-Paul at 5:34 and a shorthanded goal from sophomore Benoit Levesque of Vaudreuil, Que., at 8:27 to make it 4-0 before the midway mark of the opening stanza.

Ìý

It was the sixth shorthanded marker of the season for the Redmen who share the league lead in that department with Carleton.

Ìý

"I was pleased to see us get off to a good jump, from the drop of the puck," said Kelly Nobes, in his second season as head coach of the Redmen. "We've had some slow starts this year and it was important to get our legs moving early as we were well-rested and Queen's had to travel today after playing a home game last night. At the end of the day, we were moving our feet and that's our strength."

Ìý

Verreault-Paul made it 5-0 on the power-play with his eighth goal at 11:19 of the middle period and just 66 seconds later, Jean-Francois Boisvert of Mirabel, Que., rounded out the scoring on a long breakaway pass from defenceman Ryan McKiernan of White Plains, N.Y.

Ìý

Marc-Andre Dorion, a two-time All-Canadian rearguard from St. Hubert, Que., collected three points for the third time in four contests. He moved up to seventh in the OUA scoring race with a 4-16-20 record in 13 games and is ranked second among CIS blue-liners, two points shy of Nipissing's Brodie Beard.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ held a 36-20 margin in shots, including a 16-7 advantage in the opening period. The Redmen penalty-killing unit snuffed out all nine Gaels power-plays, including three situations where they found themselves short two men.

Ìý

"We've made special teams a point of emphasis in practice over the last two weeks," said Nobes. "Especially on the penalty-kill, where we've struggled a little. Clearly the message has sunk in as we've turned that around in our last two games (killing off 14 of 15) and we have scored twice while shorthanded."

Ìý

Goalkeeper Hubert Morin, a senior from St. George de Beauce, Que., kicked aside 20 shots for his second shutout, improving his record to 5-2 on the season and 63-23-2 lifetime with the Redmen.

Ìý

Gaels starter Riley Whitlock, a senior from Calgary who made 46 saves a week ago in a 3-2 home loss to ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, was chased from his net after the sixth goal. He made just 22 saves on 28 shots. His understudy, freshman David Aime of Clandeboye, Man., blanked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ the rest of the way, stopping all eight shots he faced.

Ìý

The division-leading Redmen improved to 10-1-2 and will head west next weekend for road games against Nipissing in North Bay, Ont., and Ryerson in Toronto, Nov. 26-27. ÌýQueen's, which dropped to 6-5-1, will host Ottawa and UQTR next week.

Ìý

REDMEN RAP: Verreault-Paul, who missed four games due to injuries, now has eight goals and one assist in his last five games. The nation's top goal-scorer in each of the last two seasons, he jumped 30 spots in the OUA scoring race in one fell swoop, going from 101st before the game to 71st by game's end.... Alex Picard-Hooper, who was the CIS player of the year last season, missed his fifth consecutive game after suffering an upper-body injury at Ottawa on Oct. 30... He is not expected back before the Christmas break... ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ evened their all-time record against Canadian university opponents at 885-885-127 dating back to their first intercollegiate game played in 1892.
