Hooray for Herra; captain contributes 22 points off bench

LENNOXVILLE - Fourth-year guard Pawel Herra of Kingston, Ont., came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points as the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen rallied to edge Bishop's 81-78 in Quebec University Basketball League men's action at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, Friday.

Herra, a 21-year-old kinesiology senior, was 7-for-10 from the field, including a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range.Ìý He was a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul-line, added three rebounds a pair of assists and a steal in 21 minutes of court time. Herra now has exactly 900 career points overall and is tied with legendary Nasko Golomeev (who only played one season!) for 16th place among the team's all-time leading scorers. Also, Herra currently has 46 treys on the season overall, the 10th highest single-season total in school history.

Other top scorers for ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ were veteran guard Matthew Thornhill (18 points) of Ile-Bizard, Que., and Montreal native Michael White (15).

For the Gaiters, Onnex Blackwood's third straight 20-point game went for naught. The rookie guard from Scarborough, Ont., shot 9-for-13 from the field, and finished with a team-high 20 points, but it was not enough to offset ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s strong outside shooting.

The Redmen hit eight three-pointers, five in the second half, and shot 42 per cent (8-for-19) from beyond the three-point arc. The Gaiters were 7-for-23 from three-point range (30%), but shot 46 per cent from the field overall.

Joining Blackwood in double figures for the Gaiters were fifth-year ±«ÓãÖ±²¥s Damon Thomas-Anderson of Verdun, Que., and Hermon Tesfaghebriel of Coquitlam, B.C., who each scored 13 points. Thomas-Anderson also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

BU opened strongly, pulling out to a 15-6 lead with 2:41 left in the first quarter, and led 19-13 at the end of the period. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ chipped away early in the second, before five points by Herra gave the Redmen their first lead of the night at 27-26, capping a 10-2 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ run. The Gaiters quickly regained the lead, and led 35-33 at halftime.

After ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ tied the game at 44-44 with 5:38 left in the third quarter, the lead changed hands four times before a Blackwood layup gave the Gaiters a 54-53 advantage with 10 minutes to play.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run, with Winn Clark's three-pointer giving them a 63-56 lead. The Gaiters responded with seven straight points to tie the score at 63-63 with 5:27 left, but were unable to retake the lead. After ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ staked out a 77-71 bulge with a minute left, a pair of three-pointers by rookie guard Jamil Abiad of Ottawa, pulled the Gaiters to within one point at 79-78 with four seconds left. However, Thornhill made a pair of free throws and the Gaiters were unable to get a quality shot off in their last possession.

The loss ended a three-game win streak for Bishop's and marked the first time in 10 games that they have allowed 80 points, dating back to a 102-88 loss at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ on November 20, 2009.

With the win, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ evened their record at 5-5 in league play (9-13 vs CIS opponents), while the Gaiters fall to 4-5 in the league and 7-12 vs. CIS teams.

BU is back in action tomorrow night as they visit second-place Laval (6-3) at the Centre PEPS in Quebec City. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ also returns to action Saturday night, as they host the last-place Concordia Stingers (2-8). Both games tip off at 8 p.m.
