Huskies bite worse than bark, beat Redmen to win own tourney

SASKATOON -- The Saskatchewan Huskies were crowned champions of the annual Graham Construction Shootout men's basketball tourney with a 73-65 win over ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, Saturday in Saskatoon.

The Regina Cougars finished second in the tourney standings with a 2-1 record, followed by ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (1-2) and the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack (0-3). ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ opened the tourney with a 95-72 loss to Regina on Thursday and a 102-67 victory over TRU, Friday.

Saskatchewan began to break away midway through the first quarter and held a 10 point lead throughout the majority of the first half up 38-27 heading into half time. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ outscored the Huskies 22-13 in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough to comeback from the early deficit. Saskatchewan led by 19 at one point in the final stanza.

The Huskies shot just 39 per cent from the field and 34 per cent from the three-point line. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ shot 41 per cent from the floor and 47 per cent from beyond the arc.

Glover had a game high 22 points, followed by Troy Gottselig with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Harra and Michael White each had 12 for the Redmen, who never got untracked after losing the services of starter Matt Thornhill only 10 minutes into the contest. The 6-foot-4 senior took four quick fouls and fouled out after receiving a technical for questioning the referee's judgement.

Earlier in the day, Regina defeated the Wolfpack 76-63.

Each team had a representative on the all-star team - Huskies Michael Linklater and Troy Gottselig, ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s Pawel Herra, Regina's Jamal Williams and Greg Stewart from Thompson Rivers. Huskie point-guard Showron Glover was named the tournament MVP after scoring 86 points in his three games at the tournament.

Herra, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior guard from Kingston, Ont., scored 34 points over the three games. He was credited with six rebounds, three steals and three assists. The 21-year-old kinesiology senior shot 40.7 per cent from the floor (11/27), 57.1 from thefoul-line (4/7) and 42.1 from the three-point arcÌý (8/19).

The Redmen are 1-5 in preseason action against CIS teams and will host Cape Breton and UPEI, two teams from the Atlantic conference on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, respectively, at Love Competion Hall. Tip-off for both games is 2 p.m.
