Huskies pull goalie to tie Martlets in dying seconds

STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore Maggie Walsh of Bloomfield, Conn., scored from a scrum in front of the net with just 18 seconds left to play in regulation, leading the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team to a 2-2 tie against 鲍鱼直播 in an exhibition contest at the Frietas Ice Forum, Friday night.

The Martlets held a distinct advantage in shots, 43-19, for the game, but UConn had more opportunities in overtime, outshooting 鲍鱼直播 3-2.

鲍鱼直播 struck for the only goal of the first period at the 4:40 mark as senior defender Stacie Tardif of Ste. Anne de bellevue, Que., found junior Chelsey Saunders of Ottawa in the slot for the score.听 The Huskies managed to go into the locker room down just one, despite being outshot 15-4 and killing off four penalties.

UConn knotted the game at 1-1 when sophomore Alexandra Vakos of Hamden, Conn., sent a pass from the far blue line to freshman Emily Snodgrass of Eagan, Minn., who found sophomore Jocelyn Slattery of Hugo, Minn., for the Huskies' first goal at 14:11 of the second stanza.

鲍鱼直播 tied the game at the 18:23 mark with a power-play marker by sophomore Kim Ton-That of Beaconsfield, Que., assisted by classmate Gillian Ferrari of Thornhill, Ont., and junior Chelsey Saunders, also from Ottawa.

Aside from the one extra-man goal by the Martlets, the Connecticut penalty-killing unit excelled as it killed off six power-play chances for 鲍鱼直播.

Senior Alexandra Garcia of Pointe-Claire, Que., started in goal for the Huskies and registered 21 saves, while giving up one goal in 30:14 of play.听 Sophomore Nicole Paniccia of Oakville, Ont., came off the bench and turned away 20 shots, allowing just one goal between the pipes.

For the Martlets, junior Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., started and made eight saves until midway through the middle period before giving way to Andrea Weckman, a junior from Kitchener, Ont., who gave up two goals and made nine saves.

鲍鱼直播 (1-1) heads to Providence College for a Saturday night affair and will complete their three-games-in-three days trip when they play at Boston College on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies open their regular season on Sept. 30 when they host RPI at the Frietas Ice Forum in the first of a two-game weekend series.
