MONTREAL - ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ football player Anthony Lukca, a 23-year-old physical education senior from St. Laurent, Que., has won an athletic excellence bursary, valued at $1,250, from the Montreal Alouettes.

Lukca, a 5-foot-9, 186-pound defensive back and long-snapper, led the nation in tackles in 2007 and ranked second in 2008. In 29 career contests with the Redmen, he has registered 180 total tackles, seven interceptions and three knockdowns.

The award was handed out during the Alouettes-Saskatchewan football game at Molson Stadium last week by Larry Smith, president of the Alouettes, who dished out bursaries totaling $27,000 to 23 student-athletes competing at the Quebec high school, collegiate and university levels. The awards are part of the bursary program generated by the Quebec Foundation for University Athletics.

Other honorees from the university level included Liam Mahoney (Concordia), Joash Gesse (Montreal), Steven Turner (Bishop's) and Benoit Groulx (Laval), plus Christian Jacques and Benoit Boulanger, both members of the Sherbrooke Vert & Or.

The Alouettes announced a three-year $75,000 investment beginning in 2004 in order to get this program on its feet and recently committed to a renewal of its partnership with the Foundation by investing $90,000 through 2010.

"Since the launch of the program in 2004, we've continued to see the growth of football in Quebec," Smith said. "We are proud to have been part of this since re-joining the CFL in 1996, and are even more so since becoming directly involved with this bursary program."
