ANTIGONISH, N.S. -- Rebecca Martindale of Kingston Ont., scored at 3:17 of overtime as top-seeded ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ escaped with a 2-1 victory over the No.4-ranked Montreal Carabins before 448 in the opening game of the CIS women's hockey championship tournament at Antigonish, N.S., Thursday.

Ìý

With the victory, the two-time defending national champion Martlets extended their record streak to 85 straight wins over CIS opponents dating back to December, 2007.Ìý ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ improved to 8-0 overall on the season against their upstart Quebec rivals, including a sweep in the best-of-three QSSF final two weeks ago. The Martlets, winners of three overtime games during the lengthy streak, have done so twice against the Carabins, who previously dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime on Oct. 4, 2009 at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s McConnell Arena.

On the winning goal, Martindale converted a nice feed from Jordanna Peroff, a third-year ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Keswick, Ont., to beat Carabins netminder Catherine Herron high to the glove side with her third game-winner on four post-season goals.

Ìý

"I just crossed the blueline, saw Peroff with the puck on the left-side, found myself all alone in front of the net and started screaming (for the pass)," said Martindale. "I took a swing at it and luckily I connected before falling."

Ìý

Afer a scoreless first period, Cathy Chartrand, a two-time all-Canadian defenceman from Lac Nominingue, Que., finally broke the ice for the Martlets at 18:33 of the second stanza when she deflected a point shot shot from Peroff. Chartrand, the Quebec league's player of the year, also assisted on the overtime winner.

Ìý

The Carabins, an expansion team in the Quebec conference, brought the teams back to square one at 6:23 of the third frame when Caroline Martin-Guay of St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., connected on a power-play, deflecting a shot from the point by captain Stéphanie Daneau of Drummondville, Que.

Ìý

Herron, a transfer from ±«ÓãÖ±²¥,Ìý was sensational between the pipes for the Carabins. The native of Chambly, Que., who is the niece of former NHL goalie Denis Herron, turned aside 38 of 40 shots as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ held a 10-6 advantage in shots after the opening period, a 21-8 margin after two periods, and a 33-10 difference at the end of regulation time. The Martlets outshot Montreal 7-0 in the brief overtime period. Herron earned Blackberry player-of-the-game honours for the Carabins while Chartrand got the nod for the Martlets.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goaltender Taylor Salisbury, a freshman from Surrey, B.C.,Ìý registered nine saves for the win, improving to 5-0 in post-season play.

Ìý

The game started with an unusually high number of penalties for a national championship affair, as referee Katie Gullett called six minors in the first period alone and ended up dishing out 10 penalties in the game. Montreal successfully held off a Martlets 5-on-3 power play chance for 56 seconds early in the opening period. Minutes later, the Carabins then had their own 5-on-3 opportunity where they moved the puck around but had no solid shots on net as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ was aggressive on the penalty-kill.

Ìý

"The Carabins really came out strong and we didn't start with a sense of urgency," said ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ head coach Amey Doyle. "We got better as the game wore on and had a big margin in shots but couldn't seem to get to the net. Herron had a great game but we didn't drive the net hard. However, we finally solved that in overtime. We kept it simple and put the puck in deep as we knew that they couldn't match our speed."

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (1-0) earns a day off on Friday before playing the No. 4-seeded Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday night at 4 p.m. (Atlantic). The Martlets hammered Saint Mary's 11-0 last fall in their only meeting of the season. The Carabins (0-1) will meet the Huskies Friday at 7:30 pm.
