Martlets sink Stingers in soccer home-opener

MONTREAL - Midfielder Selena Colarossi of Burlington, Ont., snapped a 1-1 draw with less than 15 minutes remaining as No.7-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ tripled visiting Concordia 3-1 in Quebec university women's soccer action at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.

It improved ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s undefeated streak over Concordia to 16-0-1 dating back to their last loss, a 1-0 setback on penalty kicks in the 2002 conference semifinal. The Martlets have not lost a regular-season contest to their cross-town rivals since a 2-1 decision at Concordia on Oct. 23, 1993 and have posted a 32-0-3 head-to-head record over that span.

Colarossi, an 18-year-old science sophomore, pounced on a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and rifled the game-winner to the right of rookie goalkeeper Catherine Perusse-Daigneault from Boisbriand, Que.

Kathleen Wakeling, a senior defender from Edmonton, had given the Martlets a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute. She took a pass from Alexandria Hoyle of Laval, Que., and unloaded a left-footer into the far-side right corner of the net from about 10 yards out.

Concordia netted the equalizer in the 69th minute after Jennifer Duff of Moncton converted a crossing pass from Gabriela Padvaiskas and bounced a header over ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ goalkeeper Victoria Muccilli.

After Colarossi put ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ ahead, teammate Meghan Bourque, also from Burlington, added an insurance marker in injury time. She took a nifty feed from Alexandra Morin-Boucher, who was stationed near the left corner of the field, and blasted a low drive past Perusse-Daigneault.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ had a 17-9 edge in shots directed toward the net and a 4-3 margin in corner kicks. Muccilli, a sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., was credited with four saves in the victory while Perusse-Daigneault made nine saves in a losing cause.

The Martlets, which improved to 3-0, will play at Laval (1-1) on Sunday. The winless Stingers (0-3) are slated to host UQAM (0-3) on Sunday at 3 p.m.

MARTLET MURMURS: Marc Mounicot and Jorge Sanchez, respective head soccer coaches at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ and Concordia, started the game barefoot behind the bench, as part of a "Go Shoeless" awareness campaign, sponsored by the CIS and "Right to Play", to raise awareness for those who do not have access to sports and proper sporting equipment.
