MONTREAL - Fans who bring a non-perishable food item can gain free admission to the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ volleyball doubleheader against Sherbooke on Friday (Nov. 27). The women's match is slated for a 6 p.m. start, followed by the men's contest at 8 p.m.

This event is part of the second annual Holiday Food Drive, an initiative of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Varsity Council, a student-run group which represents some 950 intercollegiate athletes.

The food drive is in effect until Dec. 14 and anyone can drop non-perishable food items into the two bins located behind the front-door security desk and outside the cafeteria at the Currie Gym (475 Pine Ave. West).

In conjunction with the Holiday Food Drive, hundreds of ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ varsity athletes will get together on Nov. 29 for Varsity Outreach Day. They will collect more food items by canvassing door-to-door, in the Plateau region north of the campus and in the "±«ÓãÖ±²¥ student ghetto", an area bordered by Pine Avenue, Park, Sherbrooke and University Street.

All donations will go to the Sun Youth organization and the participants will then be invited to a varsity basketball game in January.

"It's important that we recognize the need to help underprivileged families, especially at this time of the year when the holidays are around the corner," said Thomas Fabian, captain of the Redmen volleyball team and vice-president (community outreach) of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Varsity Council.

"This is one of the few times that our athletes from all sports have an opportunity to get-together anddo something for the Community. The Varsity Council feels that this is a great way to get to know one another at the same time as helping out those in need during the holiday season. We are very proud of the initiative that our athletes started last year and we hope that this event will grow every year."
