±«ÓãÖ±²¥ to hand out silverware at Athletics Awards Gala on Thursday

MONTREAL - The ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ male and female athletes of the year will be announced on Thursday evening at the University's 33rd annual athletics awards gala, to be held at the AMC Forum, located on the corner of Atwater avenue and Ste. Catherine street.

Four all-Canadians are in the running for the Major D.S. Forbes trophy, presented to the male student-athlete who has brought the most credit to the University by reason of his athletic achievements

Swimmer Steven Bielby, a CIS gold medalist sprinter from Pointe Claire, Que., who won the Forbes as a freshman last year, will be going up against Francis Verreault-Paul, a sophomore ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Mashteuiatsh, Que., who was the OUA hockey player of the year. Rounding out the finalists is basketball guard Matt Thornhill, a senior from Ile-Bizard, Que., who was voted QUBL player of the year and soccer scoring leader Yohann Capolungo, a sophomore midfielder from France, who led ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ to an unexpected silver-medal finish at Nationals.

Among the candidates on the women's side, who will take home the Gladys Bean trophy, is five-time all-Canadian volleyball player Jennifer Thomson of Rosemere, Que., and Mélissa °ä´Ç°ùé, the Quebec conference golfer of the year from Beaconsfield, Que.Ìý The two other finalists are sophomore Katherine Green, an all-Canadian defender from Richmond Hill, Ont., and rearguard Cathy Chartrand, who was named player of the year in the Quebec women's hockey league.

Eight other major trophies will be presented, in addition to the MVP awards for all 48 varsity teams.
