±«ÓãÖ±²¥ hoops star Martin named De Facto Quebec athlete of the week

MONTREAL - ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ basketball player Marie-Eve Martin is the De Facto Quebec university female athlete of the week for the period ending Jan. 30, 2011.

It marks the eighth timeÌý that a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ student has captured the conference's weekly award by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec.

Ìý

Martin, a 5-foot-7 guard from Granby, Que., scored 24 points, including a game-winning three-pointer at the final buzzer, as visiting ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ edged Laval 62-59 in women's basketball last Friday. Martin converted an in-bound pass with 1.4 seconds remaining and drained her sixth trey of the night to tie the single-game ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ record for three-pointers. The 21-year-old sociology sophomore, made nine of 17 shots from the field, including a 6-for-11 performance from three-point range. She Ìýwas also credited with four steals and three rebounds.

The Quebec male athlete of the week award went to volleyball player Karl De Grandpré from Université Laval.

Previous recipients from ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ include distance runner Sarah McCuaig (Sept. 20 and Nov. 1), hockey players Francis Verreault-Paul (Oct. 26) and Alex Picard-Hooper (Oct. 16, Jan. 9), rugby player Gideon Balloch (Nov. 16), plus soccer star Alexandra Morin-Boucher (Sept. 13).

De Facto is an innovative tobacco prevention campaign led by Sport Étudiant, geared towardsÌýeliminating smoking among young adults and revealing the truth about the consequences of using tobacco.
