±«ÓãÖ±²¥ kicker Anderson among top prospects for 2012 CFL draft

OTTAWA - Austin Anderson, a place-kicker with the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Redmen, has been ranked among the top prospects for the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft.

The CFL's Scouting Bureau published Monday its initial Top 15 list of the season. Anderson, the son of former NFL star kicker Gary Anderson, is currently ranked 12th and is among a group of nine CIS players to make the grade.

A 21-year-old finance senior, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound native of Canmore, Alta., earned all-conference honours during his sophomore season of Quebec university football. A three-time Academic All-Canadian majoring in finance, Anderson has connected on 80.5 per cent of his field-goals (33 of 41). He has made nine of 14 attempts from over 40 yards, including successful distances of 49, 48 (twice) and 46.

The top-ranked prospect is University of Saskatchewan guard Ben Heenan. The a 6-foot-4, 310-pound senior, was named a first-team CIS all-Canadian a year ago in his third campaign with the Huskies. The native of Regina is also a former Canada West rookie of the year.

Other CIS standouts included on the Scouting Bureau's September list are Wilfrid Laurier wide receiver Shamawd Chambers at No. 2, Laval linebacker Frédéric Plesius at No. 4, Calgary offensive lineman Kirby Fabien at No. 5, Sherbrooke wide receiver Ismaël Bamba at No. 6, Saskatchewan defensive back Bryce McCall at No. 7, Sherbrooke wideout Simon Charbonneau-Campeau at No. 8 and Western Ontario guard Matt Norman at No. 11.

Plesius, McCall, Charbonneau-Campeau and Norman were also first-team all-Canadians in 2010.

Charbonneau-Campeau, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., was the Quebec conference MVP and a nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy last season.

Plesius, a 6-foot-1, 245-pound junior from Laval, Que., was a finalist for the Presidents' Trophy as CIS defensive player of the year and led the Rouge et Or to a Vanier Cup championship.

Last spring, St. Francis Xavier linebacker Henoc Muamba, the 2010 Presidents' Trophy winner, became the fifth straight CIS player - and the ninth in 12 years - to be selected first overall in the CFL Canadian Draft.
