MONTREAL - Jenna Holdham, a sophomore defender from Ottawa, scored the game-winner as visiting ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ blanked UQAM 1-0 in Quebec university women's soccer at the Centre Claude Robillard, Sunday.

Ìý

The No.8-ranked Martlets improved to 2-0 after sweeping both weekend games, including a 2-0 whitewash at Bishop's in the season opener, Friday.

Ìý

Holdham hit pay-dirt on a header in the 19th minute of play, converting a free kick awarded to defender Kelsey Wilson of Pincourt, Que.

Ìý

Victoria Muccilli, a 5-foot-9 sophomore goalkeeper from Mississauga, Ont., made four saves to earn the shutout.

Ìý

The game wasn't as close as the final score indicated because ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ failed to convert numerous scoring opportunities. They were thwarted time and time again by UQAM 'keeper Constance Laroche-Lefebvre and a solid defensive performance, led by all-Canadian Justine Labrecque.

Ìý

"We had possession for most of the match and did not expose ourselves to any scoring threats - for the second straight outing," said a head coach Marc Mounicot, who collected his 201st career victory behind the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ bench.

Ìý

The Martlets had a 9-5 territorial edge in shots toward net, a 19-1 advantage in crosses and a 9-1 margin in corner kicks.

Ìý

"We looked well-organized and showed superior conditioning as the game wore on," added Mounicot. "It was a good weekend for us, two nice wins while keeping the opposition far away from our net. Our back four defenders were solid and the team seems to have adjusted very well to the new system of play that we have implemented."

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will host Concordia in their home-opener on Sept. 16, followed by a road game at Laval, Sept. 18.

Ìý

MARTLET MURMURS: The Martlets played both games over the weekend without six injured veterans, including Katherine Green, Hannah Rivkin, Anna Smith, Meghan Bourque and Carolyn Bell, plus Bahar Sansar, a first-year transfer from the University of South Florida. However, Coach Mounicot indicated that he expects to have as many as three of them back in the line-up next weekend.
