±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s Bettez named CIS athlete of the week

OTTAWA (CIS) - Ann-Sophie Bettez, a hockey player from ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, and Jimmy Dorsey, a basketball player from Cape Breton University, are the CIS athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 15, 2012.

Bettez, who is enrolled in a public relations management certificate, was in on eight of her team's nine goals last weekend as the top-ranked Martlets (12-1) posted back-to-back shutouts over Concordia, 4-0, and No. 10 Montreal, 5-0. The fifth-year ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Sept-ÃŽles, Que., scored the game-winner and added three assists on Friday against the Stingers, and then tallied two more goals and a pair of helpers the next day against the Carabins. A three-time all-Canadian, Bettez currently leads the RSEQ conference in scoring with 26 points (11-15-26) in only 13 games.

Bettez is the second ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ athlete to be selected at the CIS level this season, joining teammate Leslie Oles, who earned the CIS weekly honour on Nov. 23.

St. Francis Xavier hockey player Janelle Parent, Ryerson basketball player Angela Tilk and Winnipeg volleyball player Lauren Sears were also nominated for the women's award.

Dorsey, a fourth-year student from Baltimore, Md., averaged 25 points a game last week as he led the Capers (7-3) to three straight wins and first place in the AUS standings. The 6-foot-2 guard kicked off the three-game set last Wednesday with a 24-point, eight-assist, five-rebound performance in a 101-88 victory over the StFX X-Men, who were undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the country prior to the contest. He then added 23 points and seven assists on Saturday in a 94-61 defeat of Memorial, and a 28-point, 11-rebound double-double the next day in an 88-84 win over the same Sea-Hawks. A two-time Atlantic conference all-star, Dorsey is currently third in AUS and seventh in CIS scoring with 20.6 points per outing.

Harold Vulgaire, a track and field athlete from Sherbrooke, and hockey players Garrett Sheehan from Toronto and Kyle Ross from Saskatchewan were the other male nominees.
