MONTREAL - Two basketball players Matthew Thornhill and Olivier Bouchard, from ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, both students in the Desautels faculty of management, are among the major award recipients announced by the Quebec University Basketball League.

Ìý

Both will be in action on Saturday when the playoffs open with third-seeded ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (8-8) visiting second-place Laval (10-6) on Saturday in a men's sudden-death semifinal at 8 p.m. The other semifinal, slated for Friday at 7 p.m., has fourth-place Bishop's (7-9) travelling to division-leading UQAM (11-5).

Thornhill, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard from ÃŽle-Bizard, Que., was selected as the league's most outstanding player of the year and received all-conference status, while Bouchard, a 5-foot-10 point-guard from Montreal, was named rookie of the year. He also merited second-team all-star status and received QUBL all-rookie honours along with ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ teammate Nicolas Langley of Missoula, Montana.

Ìý

Thornhill, who is the first ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ player to receive player-of-the-year honours since Domenico Marcario in 2000-01, never missed a beat, despite playing most of the season with a broken nose. He finished first in league in both scoring (293) and points-per-game with an average of 18.3. The 23-year-old finance senior, ranked second among conference leaders in three-point shooting (45.8%), second in three-pointers per game (2.4 avg.), third in free-throw percentage (79.3%), third in minutes played (31.3 avg.), sixth in defensive rebounds (3.8 avg.), ninth in field-goal shooting (45.9%) and was 12th in both rebounding (4.9 avg.) and in steals (1.2 avg.).

Bouchard, the shortest player on the Redmen squad, quickly found a spot in the starting rotation, finishing his inaugural CIS season with an average of 9.9 points and 3.7 assists per game. The 20-year-old freshman shot 39.8% from the floor, 34.8% from beyond the three-point line and drained 79.6% of his free throws.

Other major award winners were UQAM's Éric Côté-Kougnima of Gatineau, Que., who was the unanimous choice for defensive player of the year and Olga Hrycak, a woman who earned the nod as the QUBL men's basketball coach of the year after guiding her team to first-place with an 11-5 record in this, her seventh year as bench boss of the Citadins. Also, Mike Homsy, a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ graduate who once played for the Redmen, was named QUBL official of the year.
