Morin-Boucher's last-second goal extends Martlet soccer win streak to three

PLATTSBURGH, NY - Alexandra Morin-Boucher, a third-year striker from Montreal, scored in injury time as the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ women's soccer team came away with a thrilling 1-0 road victory at Plattsburgh State on Tuesday. It was ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s third consecutive victory in as many pre-season games.

Ìý

The winning marker was initiated by a corner-kick from freshman Selena Colarossi of Burlington, Ont. Her shot was deflected by Stephanie Avery, a freshman ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Tsawassen, B.C., and volleyed home by Morin-Boucher.

Martlets rookie goalkeeper Valerie Labbé was called upon to make three saves for her second career shutout.

Ìý

"We played with more intensity and enthusiasm in the second half," said Marc Mounicot, in his 13th year as head coach of the Martlets. "Those are qualities that we will need to be successful this season."

Ìý

The second half featured a lineup that was composed primarily of freshmen "They demonstrated a lot of character and poise," noted Mounicot.

Ìý

It was a costly win, however, as co-captain Carolyn Bell, a second-year defender from West Vancouver, B.C., suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury while making a tackle in the defensive zone during the 10th minute of play.

Ìý

"The loss of Bell was no doubt a psychological factor in our sluggish first half," said a concerned Mounicot, whose young squad has suffered a plethora of injuries in the preseason. "She will be reassessed by our physiotherapy staff (Wednesday) and we will keep our fingers crossed for good news."

Ìý

The Martlets, who opened their campaign with 2-0 and 2-1 victories over Guelph and York on Aug. 21 and 22, respectively, will depart Friday for the Old Four tournament in Kingston, Ont. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ opens against Western at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Ìý

The Redmen soccer team will take part in the men's and women's tourney, along with Toronto and Queen's.
