Muccilli masterful as Martlets neutralize Carabins
Ìý
MONTREAL - Freshman goalkeeper Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, Ont., kicked aside all three shots faced to earn her fourth shutout in as many starts as the No.2-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ women's soccer team battled the No.6-Montreal Carabins to a 0-0 tie at Stade CEPSUM, Sunday.
Ìý
The scoreless draw extended ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s undefeated streak to 6-0-2, including a 5-0-1 mark in regular season play. It also gave the Martlets a three-point cushion atop the QUSL standings, ahead of Montreal (4-1-1) and Laval (4-1-1).
Ìý
Muccilli, a five-foot-nine freshman who sat on the bench through the team's first nine matches (including preseason), has now started in four of ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s last five games. She has kicked aside all 10 shots faced to date.
Ìý
Sarah Therrien, her counterpart at the other end of the field, made five saves for the Carabins to register her league-leading fifth shutout of the campaign.
Ìý
The game featured 33 fouls, including 17 by Montreal. Six yellow cards were handed out by the referee, four of them to the Carabins.
Ìý
"It was a hard physical contest between two well-balanced teams," said Marc Mounicot, in his 13th season as head coach of the Martlets. "Montreal was dangerous on set plays having the edge on corners kicks but Muccilli was solid and composed all game long. It was a pretty fair result for both teams."
Ìý
Carabins head coach Kevin McConnell, wasn't as happy with his troops. "Our players were too gracious against ±«ÓãÖ±²¥," said McConnell, a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ grad and former teammate of Mounicot's when the Redmen won their last national championship in 1997. "We let our opponent play with too much ease on our field and we lost control of our emotions."
Ìý
Both teams had good chances to score, especially ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s Meghan Bourque, a freshman midfielder from Burlington, Ont., who hit the goalpost with about 10 minutes remaining. Likewise, Véronique Laverdière, an All-Canadian striker with the Carabins, was also thwarted on two glorious scoring chances in the second half.
Ìý
"I would have liked to see more composure with respect to ball possession but Montreal was very aggressive and did not give us much space and time," added Mounicot. "We started eight freshmen and they responded well to the pressure. We matched Montreal in every aspect of the game. We were well-prepared and tactically-speaking, knew exactly what to do."
Ìý
The Carabins will host Sherbrooke on Oct. 2, while the Martlets will host UQAM at Molson Stadium and play at Sherbrooke on Oct. 1 and 3, respectively.
