Mustangs run wild at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Open cross-country meet

MONTREAL - Sarah McCuaig, a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ sophomore from Waterloo, Ont., was the top university runner and finished second overall at the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Open cross-country meet held on the slopes of Mt. Royal, Saturday.

The Western Ontario Mustangs swept both the men's and women's titles.

McCuaig, a 19-year-old science major, completed the four-kilometre course in 14 minutes, 38 seconds, one second behind race winner Avril Ogrodnick of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Olympic Club. Annie Leblanc of College L'Assomption was third in 14:49.

Other ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Martlets to finish in the scoring were Charlene Puel (6th, 15:14), Madeleine Cummings (10th, 15:32), Catherine Drouin-Audet (15th, 15:46) and Aimee Castro (20th, 15:54)

Western placed five runners among the top 14 spots and scored 52 points to edge out ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ by one point in the women's division. They were led by Becky Pieterson who was fifth in 15:11.

On the men's side, Laval's Charles Philibert-Thiboutot won gold, completing the 6k race in 19:32. Emmanuel Boisvert of College Ste. Foy was second in 19:34 and Western's Brent Smith rounded out the podium finishers in 19:39.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s top performance was by Daniel Kramer who was clocked at 20:32 to finish 14th.

The Mustangs scored five runners among the top 12 to register 36 points, easily outdistancing second-place Laval (70) and a surprising third-place finish by Concordia (93), who beat out fourth-place ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ (126).
