OTTAWA - ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ freshman Simon Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., scored a game-high 16 points but it was all in vain as the University of Cincinnati Bearcats clawed back from a first-quarter deficit to easily defeat the Redmen 89-58 in preseason basketball, Friday.

Ìý

"You can't underestimate the value of playing an NCAA team," said Dave DeAveiro, in his first season as head coach of the Redmen after nine years with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. "The one thing that we decided to do was take this team and play the hardest possible preseason schedule. It better prepares our guys and lets them know how hard we have to work to be a championship calibre team."

Ìý

In the first of a three-game Canadian exhibition tour, Cincy started out on the wrong end of a 20-16 score after the first quarter thanks to hot shooting from beyond the arc. The Redmen shot a sizzling 73 per cent from "La-La land" in the first half, connecting on 16 of 22 attempts. They finished the game at 62 per cent, making 18 of 29 from three-point range.

Ìý

"They did a great job getting ready for us," said Mick Cronin, head coach of the Bearcats. "±«ÓãÖ±²¥ hit a few threes early and it really boosted their confidence, but I'm really proud of our guys' effort."

Ìý

From the second quarter on, the Bearcats outscored the Redmen, 73-38, leading 42-34 at the half and 65-45 after three quarters. UC eventually found a rhythm offensively by sharing the ball and finding cutters for easy baskets. The Bearcats shot 58 per cent for the game after a stellar 64 per cent in the second half.

Bibeau, a 6-foot-2 guard, shot 4-for-12 from the field and went an impressive 7-for-7 from the charity stripe for ±«ÓãÖ±²¥. Teammate Nic Langley, a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Golden, B.C., contributed 13 points and 6-foot-6 freshman Cody Mazza-Anthony of Hamilton, Ont., added nine points while pulling down a team-high five rebounds.

Ìý

Twelve of the 14 Bearcats that played ended up in the scoring column, while only six Redmen got on the scoresheet. Sophomore Jaquon Parker drew the start at point-guard and led the Bearcats in scoring with 15 points.

Ìý

Sophomore Sean Kilpatrick, who sat out last year as a "redshirt", tallied 14 points in his collegiate debut for Cincinnati.

Ìý

A hallmark of the Cronin era at UC has been outrebounding opponents and UC owned a 33-17 advantage on the glass with Ibrahima Thomas leading the way, pulling down six rebounds.

Ìý

"It's good to play (±«ÓãÖ±²¥) because they're so physical," said Yancy Gates who added nine points for UC. "They tug and pull. It was a good win for us."

On Saturday night, the Bearcats meet up with Carleton University at 6 p.m. EST at ScotiaBank Place, the home of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. Carleton has won the Canadian national championship in six of the past eight seasons.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which lost to Maine 87-66, in their season opener on Aug. 25, now gets a six-week break to prepare for the CIS season. The Redmen are slated to play Carleton, Victoria and Windsor at the House-Laughton Hoops Classic in Ottawa, Oct. 15-17.
