OBIT: ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ sports scientist Dr. David Montgomery, dead at 56

MONTREAL -- The ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ department of athletics is sad to announce the sudden death of Dr. David Montgomery, a professor for the past 30 years in the department of kinesiology & physical education. He was 56.

Montgomery, originally from Iroquois, Ont., suffered an apparent heart attack on Wednesday while jogging near his home in Lancaster, Ont. A former triathlon competitor and a renowned exercise physiologist, he was the first director of the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Seagram's Sports Science Centre, which conducts physiological testing of elite athletes, including the Montreal Canadiens hockey team.

His most recent research was focussed on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the enhancement of ice hockey performance via equipment modifications and physical training.

Born Jan. 1, 1948, Montgomery went on to play varsity football at the University of Guelph, graduating in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree, majoring in physical education. He moved on to Purdue University, where he coached hockey and earned both a master's degree in physical education (1972) and a doctorate degree (1974).

Montgomery joined the faculty of education at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ in 1974 and was among the first Canadians to earn a Level 5 coaching certification in hockey. He is survived by his wife Carol.

The flag outside the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Sports Centre is being flown at half-mast and visitation is scheduled for Friday (Nov. 5), from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Marsden & Mclaughlin Funeral Home, 10 Beach Avenue, Iroquois, Ont., located approximately 50 km west of Cornwall on Highway 401 (exit Carman Rd., south).

A funeral service will be conducted in Iroquois on Saturday at 11 a.m. The family has indicated that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, c/o the Dept. of Physical Education, 475 Pine Ave. W., Montreal, Que. H2W 1S4.
