MONTREAL - Leslie Oles, a sophomore ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Beaconsfield, Que., celebrated her 21st birthday with a hat-trick and added an assist as the No.1-ranked ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ Martlets crushed the Montreal Carabins 10-1 in women's hockey at CEPSUM Arena, Friday.

Ìý

The result avenged a 3-2 loss to the Carabins on Oct. 29, which had snapped ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s 107-game win streak against league opponents. It also was the biggest offensive explosion by the Martlets in 26 games, dating back to a 10-0 home-ice victory over Ottawa, Feb. 12, 2011.

Ìý

"It was the first time this year that we really looked hungry around the net," said Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets, who had not scored more than four goals in eight straight games overall. "It's something that we've been working on in practice over the last week and it paid off. There was a good sense of urgency out there and that was nice to see."

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ led 2-0 after the opening period and 6-0 after two before Maude Gélinas of Montreal spoiled Charline Labonté's bid for a shutout at 5:35 of the final stanza. It was Labonté's first game back after missing three contests while playing for the national team at the Four Nation's Cup in Sweden, where she won her only start, a 3-1 victory over the USA.

Ìý

Oles, who moved into third-place and scoring leaders in the RSEQ conference, opened the scoring midway through the first period, assisted on ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s second goal to make it 3-0.Ìý She struck again to make it 5-0 on the power-play at 13:21 of the middle session, then completed the hat-trick at 5:46 of the final period to make the score 7-1.

Ìý

"She played well, worked hard and kept her feet moving which is what she needs to do to be successful," said Smith of the speedy Oles, who leads the Martlets in both goals (8) and penalty minutes (24). "She even stayed out of the box and drew a couple of penalties."

Defenceman Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., tallied twice, while singles went to Kim Ton-That of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., Kelsi Moffatt of Pickering, Ont., Mélodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., Katia Clément-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., and Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que.

Ìý

Daoust, who also played for Canada at the tourney in Sweden, had a four-point night, as did Clément-Heydra.

Ìý

Rachel Ouellette, a sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., started in net for the second-place Carabins. She conceded four goals on 13 shots before being replaced by freshman Elodie Rousseau-Sirois of Pohenegamook, Que., who was beaten six times on 16 shots.

Ìý

The shots were even at 29 shots apiece as Labonté, the fifth-year senior from Boisbriand, Que., made 28 saves for the Martlets, improving to 5-1-0 on the campaign and 71-2-0 lifetime in regular season play.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥, which improved to 7-1-0, went 3-for-7 on the power play. They travel to Ottawa (2-6-0) on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Carabins, who fell to 6-2-1, play at Concordia (3-5-0) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
