Oops he did it again! Bielby strikes gold at swim Nationals!!

Published: 20 February 2010

Ìý

TORONTO - Steven Bielby, a 20-year-old ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ engineering sophomore from Pointe Claire, Que., won one gold, a silver and a pair of bronze medals at the CIS swim championships over the weekend, a three-day meet held at U of T's Varsity Pool.

Ìý

Bielby finished atop the podium in the grueling men's 1500-metre freestyle, completing the marathon race in 15 minutes, 18.09 seconds, destroying his own school record set last year (15:22.71). He was second in the 400 individual medley (4:14.72) and scored third-place finishes in both the 200 IM (2:01.11) and 400 freestyle (3:51:00).

Ìý

"I pretty much did what I was hoping to do here," said Bielby, who had a somewhat disappointing regular season after striking gold three times at the CIS championships last year. "This meet went well for me after a tough season of trying to balance five classes with a physically demanding workout schedule. It was a bit of a learning curve for me this year but worked out well in the end."

Ìý

Bielby earned all-Canadian honours for the second straight year and qualified for an eight-man squad of CIS swimmers that will be going to the Mare Nostrum Series, a high-profile European tour of World Cup meets, in June.

Ìý

He now owns four CIS gold medals over his two years at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, tying the school career record held by current teammate Francois Castonguay (two golds in 2005 and two more in 2006). Bielby's seven CIS medals overall is the third highest career total ever by a ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ male swimmer, behind Alexandre Pichette's 10 (2-3-5) and David Allard's eight (1-1-6).

Ìý

"Steven was on a tougher workout schedule this year and never really backed off the training," said ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ head coach Peter Carpenter. "But we tapered his workouts the last few weeks to give him more rest for this meet. His results here may have caught a few people by surprise this weekend but after winning seven medals over two years. I don't think he will be catching anyone by surprise next year."

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ placed 12th of 19 teams overall with 105 points in the men's division and 13th of 20 with 45 points on the women's side. At the Nationals last year, the Redmen scored 100 points and the Martlets had 32.

Ìý

"The team did as well as I expected," said Carpenter, in his first year as head coach. "This meet was substantially deeper and faster than last year's event. "We had a number of personal bests, ended up with a few more qualifiers for the consolation round than we had last year, our relays swam faster times and we scored more points than last year's championships. Overall, I was happy with the progress we made."

Ìý

The Calgary Dinos captured both the men's and women's team titles for the first time in school history. The U of C women did so in convincing fashion and put their stamp on the event with a new Canadian record of 4:03.28 in the final event of the meet, the 4x100 medley relay.

Ìý

Calgary medalled in 16 of 19 events to finish with 679 points, 140 points ahead of the UBC T-birds.

Ìý

Calgary's men's team held off a charge from the host Toronto Varsity Blues with a strong showing on the podium on Saturday. The Dino men finished the meet with 636.5 points to claim their second banner in three years.

Ìý

Montreal (385.5), Western (326.5) and Toronto (317.5)Ìý rounded out the top 5 in the women's team standings, with UBC (377), Laval (361.5) and Dalhousie (240) occupying the same spots in the men's race.

Ìý

Toronto's Colin Russell, a 2008 Olympian from Burlington, Ont., was named CIS male swimmer of the year for the second consecutive season after he claimed seven medals in as many races including three individual gold and two relay gold, an individual second-place finish and a relay silver for a FINA score of 1806. The fifth-year veteran also earned the Sprinter's Cup for the second time in as many years, having defended his titles in both the 50- and 100-metre freestyle events.

Ìý

Russell broke the CIS record in the men's 50 freestyle on Friday with a time of 21.73.Ìý He went on to win the 100 free on Saturday in a time of 47.94, 0.73 seconds ahead of Laval's Dominique Massie-Martel. He also captured gold in the 200 free (1:45.04), was a member of the first-place 4x200 free and 4x100 medley relay teams, and was a silver medallist in the 50 breast (27.73) and the 4x100 free relay.

Ìý

UBC's Martha McCabe was named the CIS female swimmer of the year for her double-gold medal performance in the 50- and 200-breaststrokes. The third-year swimmer scored the highest FINA score of the women's competition (937) and had the highest combined total of 1,826.

Ìý

The Toronto native finished first in the 200 breast (2:21.91) as the T-Birds swept the podium on Friday night.Ìý The third-year human kinetics major placed third in the 50 breast in a time of 31.95.Ìý McCabe also claimed a silver medal in the women's 100 breast, 0.59 seconds behind 2010 Sprinter's Cup recipient Erica Morningstar of the Calgary Dinos.

Ìý

Morningstar, a sophomore who has now won 14 gold medals in 14 CIS championship races, defended her 2009 CIS title in the 50 free (25.21), out-touching co-silver medallists Hayley Nell of Western Ontario and Marie-Pier Ratelle of Laval (25.51).

Ìý

The Regina native finished with a gold-medal performance in the 100 free (54.21) on Saturday. She also earned gold in the women's 100 breast (1:06.71), 200 IM relay (2:11.57) and was a member of the Dino's first-place finishes in the 4x100 free, 4x200 free and 4x100 medley relays.

Ìý

Bogdan Knezevic of the Calgary Dinos earned 2010 male rookie of the year honours.Ìý The first-year science major finished third in the 100 breast for his first appearance on the CIS podium.Ìý Knezevic finished in a time of 1:01.11 behind teammate and gold-medalist Jason Block (59.42) and Western's Bryn Jones (1:01.10).Ìý The Toronto native also finished fourth in the 200 breast (2:14.37) and in fifth place in the 200 IM (2:01.44)

Ìý

Calgary's Allison Long was named the female rookie of the year with a gold-medal finish in the 50 breast.Ìý The Calgary native finished the race in 31.10 seconds, edging Laval's Marie-Pier Ratelle (31.77) and McCabe (31.95).

Ìý

She was a member of the Dinos' gold-medal and record-setting 4x100 medley relay team and finished fourth in the 100 breast in 1:08.73 and fifth in the 200 breast (2:31.24).

Ìý

The aforementioned women's relay and new national record was followed by another spectacular duel between the Dinos and the Blues in the men's 4x100 medley relay.Ìý As was the case the night before, Calgary jumped out to the early lead after two swimmers. However, Toronto's CIS champion butterfly specialist Zach Chetrat made up a lot of ground before giving way to Russell, who passed Calgary's Ryan Gow to claim a second relay gold for the hometown Blues.
