Penalties prove costly as Redmen pecked by Ravens in semifinal opener

Published: 24 February 2010

MONTREAL - The visiting Carleton Ravens took advantage of a plethora of ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ penalties and went 4-for-6 on the power-play as they shocked No.5-ranked Redmen, skating to a 5-2 victory in an OUA East men's hockey semifinal opener at McConnell Arena, Wednesday.

Ìý

It was the third Redmen loss in five meetings with the pesky Ravens this season and snapped ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s seven-game win streak in OUA playoffs, dating back to Feb. 18, 2009.

Ìý

It was a rare off-day for the Redmen, who led the 19-team OUA (and were third in the CIS) in penalty minutes during the regular season but produced a league-leading 89.6 per cent kill rate on penalty-killing.

Ìý

Ottawa native Joey Manley tallied twice and added a helper for the Ravens, who led 1-0 after the opening period and 3-0 after two. Singles went to Brandon MacLean of Burlington, Ont., Yves Bastien of Dowling, Ont., Ìýand Connor Berard, also from Ottawa.

Ìý

The Redmen had a 46-33 advantage in shots and finally awoke from their slumber in the final stanza, outshooting Carleton 18-10 and cutting a 4-0 deficit in half on goals by Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., and Maxime Langelier-Parent of levy, Que., but they ran out of time and now find themselves on the verge of elimination.

Ìý

Verreault-Paul, a 5-foot-10 spark-plug who led the OUA in scoring and earned league MVP honours but racked up 103 penalty minutes, took five of the seven ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ penalties assessed by referee Gavin White.

Ìý

Redmen goaltender Hubert Morin, a sophomore from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., kicked aside 28 of 33 shots and was saddled with his first post-season loss, falling to 2-1.

Ìý

Carleton's Alexandre Archibald of Ottawa was credited with 44 saves and improved his playoff record to 3-1.

Ìý

Carleton, which has a 12-12-1 lifetime record against ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, can wrap up the best-of-three series with a win on Friday at the CU ice Palace in Ottawa. A ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ victory would force a rubber match on Sunday at McConnell Arena. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop.

Ìý

REDMEN RAP: ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ was whistled for 684 penalty minutes in 28 regular season games... The only CIS teams with more minutes were UPEI (689) and St. Thomas (686), each of who played the same number of games... The Redmen had 676 minutes the previous year, which was the fifth-highest total in the league... ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ is still looking to reach the 30-win plateau for the third time in school history. They are 29-12-1 overall, including a 22-6-0 record in regular-season play.
