Peroff & Wright named De Facto Quebec athletes of the week

MONTREAL -- ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ hockey players Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., and Andrew Wright of Toronto, are the De Facto Quebec university athletes of the week for the period ending March 14, 2011.

It marks the 11th and 12th time this season that ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ student-athletes have captured the conference's weekly awards, as selected by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec.

Peroff, a 21-year-old senior majoring in world religions, was named tournament MVP and led all scorers with five points in three games as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ captured the CIS women's hockey championship in Waterloo, Ont., over the weekend. The 5-foot-6 ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ set up two goals in a 4-2 win over Alberta last Thursday, then tallied the game-winner in a 3-1 victory over Queen's on Saturday. She then scored once and assisted on the winning goal in a 5-2 decision over St. F.X. in Sunday's gold medal affair. Peroff, who was named player of the game in each of the last two contests, enrolled at ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ in 2007 out of Keswick high school.

Wright, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-winger with the men's hockey team, scored three points and was named Harrow Sports player of the game in ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s 6-2 road victory over the Western Ontario Mustangs en route to capturing the centennial edition of the OUA's Queen's Cup league championship. The 21-year-old economics junior scored ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s second marker to give the Redmen a 2-0 lead, the added helpers to give improve that to 4-1 and 4-2 leads, respectively. Prior to ±«ÓãÖ±²¥, he attended the Crescent School.

Previous Quebec athlete of the week recipients from ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ include basketball players Marie-Eve Martin (Feb. 1) and Anneth Him-Lazarenko (Nov. 30), distance runner Sarah McCuaig (twice: Sept. 20 and Nov. 1), hockey players Francis Verreault-Paul (Oct. 26), Alex Picard-Hooper (twice: Oct. 16, Jan. 9) and Caroline Hill (Mar. 7), rugby player Gideon Balloch (Nov. 16), plus soccer star Alexandra Morin-Boucher (Sept. 13).

De Facto is an innovative tobacco prevention campaign led by Sport Étudiant, geared towardsÌýeliminating smoking among young adults and revealing the truth about the consequences of using tobacco.
