MONTREAL -- Gareth Pugh, a fifth-year striker from Ottawa, struck paydirt in the ninth minute of play as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ skunked the Concordia Stingers 2-0 in men's soccer action on a cold, damp soiree at Molson Stadium, Friday.

Pugh received a low cross in the slot from defender Stephen Keefe, a sophomore from Toronto, then turned and fired a bullet to the lower left side of Concordia goaltender Nicholas Giannone, who was credited with nine saves in the contest and was named by the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ coaching staff as the Stingers player of the game.

Pugh, who won similiar honours for the Redmen, then drew a penalty-kick in the 34th minute when he was pushed from behind as he was about to receive a crossing pass. Sami Obaid, a third-year medical student from Laval, Que., took the penalty shot and scored the insurance marke to the low right-hand side.

"We played well enough to win and while I wasn't really happy with our total effort, a win is a win," said Redmen head coach David Simon. "However, iImust single out Pugh, who was easily our best player out there."

Ìý

"Keeper Jean-Luc Gosselin of Longueuil, Que., made two saves to record his third goose-egg of the QUSL season.

Ìý

The result moved ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ into sole possession of third-place in the seven-team QUSL with a 4-4-3 record. Two games remain before playoffs and the Redmen are two points in arrears of second-place Laval (5-2-2) but have fourth-place UQAM (3-1-5) breathing down their necks. The last-place Stingers dropped to 0-7-3.

Ìý

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will host UQAM in a key encouter at Molson Stadiumk, Sunday. then the redmen will close out regular season play at UQTR on Nov. 1. The playoffs are scheduled to begin Nov. 6.
