Pugh tallies twice, Simon notches first win as coach

MONTREAL -- Striker Gareth Pugh, a fifth-year senior from Ottawa, scored twice, including the game-winner as the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ men's soccer team opened pre-season play for their 115th year with a 5-0 whitewash of the Lac St. Louis under-18 squad before 250 fans at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

It marked the first victory for interim head coach David Simon, who has been elevated to bench boss after two seasons as as assistant coach with the team.

After Pugh tallied in the 13th and 35th minutes, the Redmen took a commanding 3-0 lead in the second half when freshman Nicolas Gonzalez of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., converted a pass from Peter Valente in the 60th minute.

Sophomore Yohann Capolungo, a native of France, scored in the 72nd minute and Valente, a sophomore from Toronto, rounded out the rout just a minute later.

Netminder Jean-Lou Gosselin, a first-year transfer from UQAM, started, made one save and was credited with the victory, despite only playing 45 minutes. He was replaced at halftime by freshman Hikaru Bolt, a native of Japan, who shared the shutout.

The Redmen now head across the border to Manchester, N.H., for a game on Monday afternoon against Southern New Hampshire University, an NCAA team in the Northeast-10 Conference. ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will then play at the Old Four tourney in London (Aug. 29-20) before returning home to face former head coach Philippe Eullaffroy and his Trois-Rivieres Attak, a farm team of the Montreal Impact, at Molson Stadium on Sept 2.
