Redmen ravage Stingers in baseball blow-out

MONTREAL - Rookie first baseman Brian Cook of Barrington, Rhode Island, went 2-for-3 and knocked in three runs as the ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ men's baseball team hammered Concordia 18-7 in a matchup-up of undefeated teams at Trudeau Park in Cote St. Luc, Wednesday.

The Redmen improved to 5-0 and moved into a stranglehold ahead of Concordia (2-1), the defending national champions of the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association.

Cook, an engineering freshman, smacked a two-run single in the fourth to make the score 10-2. The only other ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ batter to register a multi-hit game was right-fielder Daniel Porter, the ninth-place hitter who went 2-for-2, with a pair of walks, was hit once, knocked in two and crossed home plate three times.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ scored early and often, beginning with a five-run first inning, adding three in the third, four in the next inning and one in the sixth to take a commanding 12-3 lead, then exploded for six more runs in the final stanza.

Concordia's Achilles heel was their pitching. They only allowed seven hits but delivered up 13 walks and six hit batsmen. The final inning was especially painful, in more ways than one, as the Stingers walked four and hit three batters while ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ scored six times with only one hit.

"There were no hard feelings about us being hit so many times," said ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ third-baseman Casey Auerbach, the clean-up hitter who went 1-for-3 with a walk, sacrifice fly, an RBI and one run scored. "The game was pretty much out of reach early on and we knew that they were having trouble throwing strikes, so we kind of expected (being hit). It will be a much tougher game (Thursday) because they've got their ace (Medhi Djebbar) pitching against us."

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ starter Conrad Hall improved to 2-0. He pitched five innings, allowing a pair of earned runs on four hits, striking out six, walking four and hitting one batter.
