Rookie Munro tallies game-winner as Redmen sweep Old Four tourney

KINGSTON, Ont. -- Striker Sebastian Munro, a freshman from Vancouver, B.C., snapped a deadlock with five minutes remaining as ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ edged Queen's 2-1 to capture the Old Four men's soccer tournament at Frank Tindall Field, Sunday.

The result extended ±«ÓãÖ±²¥'s undefeated streak to 3-0-1 in preseason play and marked the second Old Four title in three years for the Redmen.

Munro converted a pass from team captain Johann Capolungo, firing a rocket in the top right corner. just four minutes after Queen's had knotted the score at 1-1 on a marker from Eric Koskins in the 81st minute.

±«ÓãÖ±²¥ opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half, when Peter Valente, a third-year ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ from Toronto, scored on a header off a free-kick from Thomas Lucas of Kirkland, Que.


Sophomore Jean-Lou Gosselin, a 5-foot-10 goalkeeper from Deux Montagnes, Que., made three saves to register the win.

The Redmen will put their 3-0-1 record on the line when they play their final two preseason affairs in Maine next weekend. They will take onÌý Amherst College in Amherst on Sept. 4, followed by a game at Williams College in Williamstown on Sept. 5. Regular season play begins on Sept. 10 when ±«ÓãÖ±²¥ will host Sherbrooke at Molson Stadium.

In the men's Old Four consolation game, Western posted a commanding 3-0 win over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Niko Mavrikos had a hat-trick in the victory, connecting in the 26th, 32nd and 51st minutes. Andrew Murdoch had the clean sheet in victory.Ìý UOIT's Ryan Dillon left the game with an apparantly serious injury at the 34-minute mark and was sent to hospital via ambulance.
